Throughout he engages theoretical insights drawn from structuralism, post-structuralism, and Actor-Network Theory to retrieve the “implicit pantheon” (as opposed to the “explicit orthodox pantheon”) of esoteric Japanese Buddhism (Mikkyō). His work is particularly significant given its focus on the deities’ multiple and shifting representations, overlappings, and modes of actions rather than on individual characters and functions.

In Protectors and Predators Faure argues that the “wild” gods of Japan were at the center of the medieval religious landscape and came together in complex webs of association not divisible into the categories of “Buddhist,” “indigenous,” or “Shinto.” Furthermore, among the most important medieval gods, certain ones had roots in Hinduism, others in Daoism and Yin-Yang thought. He displays vast knowledge of his subject and presents his research―much of it in largely unstudied material―with theoretical sophistication. His arguments and analyses assume the centrality of the iconographic record as a complement to the textual record, and so he has brought together a rich and rare collection of more than 170 color and black-and-white images. This emphasis on iconography and the ways in which it complements, supplements, or deconstructs textual orthodoxy is critical to a fuller comprehension of a set of medieval Japanese beliefs and practices and offers a corrective to the traditional division of the field into religious studies, which typically ignores the images, and art history, which oftentimes overlooks their ritual and religious meaning.

Protectors and Predators and its companion volumes should persuade readers that the gods constituted a central part of medieval Japanese religion and that the latter cannot be reduced to a simplistic confrontation, parallelism, or complementarity between some monolithic teachings known as “Buddhism” and “Shinto.” Once these reductionist labels and categories are discarded, a new and fascinating religious landscape begins to unfold.

Our 18 month old loves this book.

My 18 month old son LOVES this book. He carries it around, and plays the song over and over. He does love this song, but seems attrachted to the lights and pictures as well. Each page has a new verse to the song, non-traditional, which can feel lengthy. He has worn out the batteries, which didn't last very long. There is an on and off switch on the back of the book, which we weren't dilligent in turning off, which may have helped save the battery life. We purchased button cell batteries from a local store and they were too thick, with no other sizes available, so we just ended up ordering the free replacement batteries from their website [...] It is a pack of six and you pay shipping and handleing for a total of $4, cheaper than batteries in the store were. We have been of fan of this book enough that we would purchase others from this company.

A favorite book all year long!

We bought this book probably 5 years ago. Our kids LOVED it! They read it to pieces literally! This was one of their all time favorite books! Every page has a whole new verse, not the traditional ones but a lot of newly written verses, to the song, so it can take along time if you try to go through and sing every verse but our kids mostly like the lights and music! They love playing with this when the lights are all off and seeing it all light up!!! There is an on and off switch on the back of the book. Our old book it seemed like the batteries lasted forever but we haven't had this one long enough to see how long they last! Our oldest daughter's favorite song is Silent Night probably because of this book!

My daughter LOVES this book! The pages are thick enough for her little hands to turn all by herself, and the song button is perfect size for her to push again and again. It travels well because it's so small too. The batteries ran out within 6 months, but I went on their website (listed on the back cover) and they sent 3 replacement batteries right away. Works like new!

One of the classic academic works.

A classic and authoritative work on Hawaiian myths. The book takes a very academic approach to an area which unfortunately has drifted into a causual, "fairytale" genre. Ms. Beckwith was a professional, writing on her home ground. If you are interested in the origins of Hawaiian mythology, this is a key text.

I bought this book based on the many great reviews on Amazon. This was a huge mistake. There is most likely a ton of great information in this book, but it is so poorly written I don't know how anyone could ever glean anything from it. It all just feels unorganized, like receiving a lecture from a drunken professor. There are pages and pages without a paragraph break (though there clearly should have been many), the text suddenly jumps from authors thoughts to quotes from hawaiian narratives without separating them in any way (no italics, quotes, etc). I gave up before I made it a quarter of the way through.

This turbulent era opened with the Mukden Incident of 1931, which signaled a new page in Japanese militaristic aggression in East Asia, and culminated with the Korean War (1950–1953), a protracted conflict that broke out in the wake of Japan's post–World War II withdrawal from Korea. Divided Lenses explores the ways in which events of the intervening decades have continued to shape politics and popular culture throughout East Asia and the world. The essays in part I examine historical trends at work in various "national" cinemas, including China, Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and the United States. Those in part 2 focus on specific themes present in the cinema portraying this period―such as comfort women in Chinese film, the Nanjing Massacre, or nationalism―and how they have been depicted or renegotiated in contemporary films. Of particular interest are contributions drawing from other forms of screen culture, such as television and video games.

Divided Lenses builds on the growing interest in East Asian cinema by examining how these historic conflicts have been imagined, framed, and revisited through the lens of cinema and screen culture. He's a Rodin of Poetry, My FAVORITE POET OF ALL!

I came across this talented poet/sculptor when I read the powerfully longing poem "To Someone [Not To Play]" p. 98 and knew that I had to have a book of his writing. I don't normally buy books and this is money well spent. I typically will borrow from the library but I had to make an exception with Takamura Kotaro! I only wish I owned a book of his and his wife's sculptures/artwork compilations!
I think e.e. cummings would have enjoyed "To Someone" a lot. I definitely find that his work is emotive, in the most creative sense imaginable. He was a Japanese sculptor, who was inspired by Auguste Rodin and worked in Paris. This book includes an incredible, insightful biography and commentary on his poems.
Chieko, his wife, suffered from schizophrenia and then later died in a sanitorium, much to his guilt. I noticed the similarities to his mother, when I read one poem [p.57 "Thinking of Mother"]. He idealized both of them, in their insecurities, martyrdom, and pure conscientiousness. His poems seemed to ask, "is a female's power wielded in ...leaving it, in leaving him?" Quite passive-aggressive.
The timeless poems, "Mountain Woods", "The Snow Has Piled White", and "Fountain of Mankind" reminded me of Robert Frost in their beautiful imagery of Mother Nature, of life as an endless experience of the seasons, both internally and externally.
"Lemon Elegy" was SO intense, you could TASTE the poem itself! The words conveyed an emotional power that could only be described as similar to the black and white, silent cinematography in "Snow Falling On Cedars". This is also one of his most famous poems and completely deserving! I will print this out and frame it, display it with a Rodin sculpture reproduction in my house, in tribute of this truly exquisite poet. Takamura Kotaro is my favorite poet of all time, after reading this wonderfully translated book that Hiroaki Sato made rich with nuance and kept authentic to the poet's character, meanings and moods. You will not regret buying this book. You will only regret not having enough copies to go around, when you want to send it out to everyone whom you share a special, emotional, intellectual, and spiritual bond with in your life.
I believe that Kotaro's experiences of guilt, grief, and frustration, even anger would be very useful for anyone whose had to cope with a chronic/debilitating illness in a family member. His wife died of TB 3 years after he had her hospitalized. Only those who have lived with schizophrenia in their families or have seen it up close in friends/loved ones can truly understand his decision and his intense guilt.
The insight this book offers is wonderful for ANYONE caught up in grief, or has experienced loss, as it is highly cathartic.

A Poet/Sculptor reveals his regrets

Takamura Kotaro was one of the few Japanese writers to continue publishing during the height of World War 2. He managed to do this by writing propaganda poems of the government. After the war, he found himself regretting his support for something that seemed so against his principles. This collection of poems and prose traces back his blind devotion to key moments in his childhood. Educated in France, his free form poetry smacks of French influence giving it a much lighter tone. Almost as moving as his collection of poetry about his wife, Chieko, it offers an eye opening look into one poet's remorse about his past actions.

This scholarly work first examines the discovery & establishment of tea & tea culture in China, in particular the profound influence of Lu Yu in developing a Chinese tea tradition. The remainder of the book is devoted to explaining the development of the peculiarly Japanese tea culture which grew from Chinese beginnings following tea's introduction to Japan from China during the Tang Dynasty. The book is well illustrated with some superb full colour plates, and a number of black & white photographs.
The author is the fifteenth generation tea-master entrusted with preserving the history and practising the art of the Japanese tea traditions.

Excellent resource for learning more natural-sounding, conversational Japanese

This is probably the best single book I've seen for learning Japanese. I think it's good for beginners and up as it does start with the basics of the written language and grammar but I feel like it is mainly of use to intermediate students who want to get better at developing a more conversational, informal style of speaking. This book covers a lot of important topics starting with basic sentences, more complex sentences, then onto expressing emotions, conversational interaction strategies, figures of speech, and more, wrapping up with samples from a comic book, a TV show, a cellphone novel, and other samples of real Japanese.

What I like best is the natural-sounding, conversational Japanese the book emphasizes. This is more like the way people really speak than what I've seen in any other book of this kind, so if you're at the stage of wanting to sound more natural or to better understand what people are saying on dramas and anime, I think this book could be really helpful. Another book by the same author called "Expressive Japanese" has even more real world examples from TV shows and online forums and other sources and is also highly recommended.

Not pleasant reading but a record for posterity

If you read this book for literary pleasure, you will be disappointed and probably dissatisfied. This book is essentially for academics and aficionados of this specific genre (historical records via interviews aided by overall conclusions). The subject matter is a matter of great concern and interest to a significant minority in Indonesia and the book serves as an exorcism to the horrors of a chaotic period in Indonesian history and will aid many in finding a closure to the unfortunate events experienced by the victims of ethnic based targetted atrocities. It is important because it deserves to be kept for posterity so that it will not recur in the future.

Ise monogatari is one of classical Japan’s most important texts. It influenced other literary court romances like The Tale of Genji and inspired artists, playwrights, and poets throughout Japanese history and to the present day.

In a series of 125 loosely connected episodes, the Ise tells the story of a famous lover, Captain Ariwara no Narihira (825–880), and his romantic encounters with women throughout Japan. Each episode centers on an exchange of love poems designed to demonstrate wit, sensitivity, and "courtliness."

Joshua Mostow and Royall Tyler present a fresh, contemporary translation of this classic work, together with a substantial commentary for each episode. The commentary explores how the text has been read in the past and identifies not only the point of each episode, but also the full range of historical interpretations, many of which shaped the use of the Ise in later literary and visual arts. The book includes reproductions from a version of the 1608 Saga-bon printed edition of the Ise, the volume that established Ise iconography for the entire Edo period (1600–1868).

Something for the general reader, more for the specialist

I got this because I wanted to read what's continually referred to as one of the classics of Japanese literature. So now I've read it, and ...

For the general reader (like me): it's a collection of poems with explanatory narratives, most extremely short, set out in 125 episodes with some charming 17th-century illustrations (black-and-white). It's a brief, yet interesting insight into aristocratic life and culture in 9th-century Japan, seen through the window of a single man's friendships and romantic adventures. However, a lot of the time I felt I was only just grasping the meaning of the poems and the accompanying narrative. Which leads me on to ...

For the specialist: there's a concise introduction, including a brief history of commentary on the stories; the text of the poems in transliterated Japanese; a bibliography; an index of the poems by first line in English and Japanese; and a standard index. There's also a commentary after each poem which sums up the various major interpretations of each episode and explains some of the choices the translators made.

Mostow and Tyler's prose is very accessible, and even a non-specialist like me can find some help in their commentary. Overall, I'm pleased to have read The Ise Stories and foresee myself dipping into it again and again. However, I suggest you would get more out of this book if you have read The Tale of Genji: (Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition) or The World of the Shining Prince: Court Life in Ancient Japan (Kodansha Globe).

Interesting

A really nicely produced translation of a classic of Japanese literature. The is a sequence of about 150 vignettes roughly following a man's life. Many of the vignettes poems are assembled from other anthologies though many are attributed to a single individual. Each vignette consists of a short, sometimes 1 sentence, narrative followed by a poem or poems. Some vignettes contain additional narrative. The poetry is highly allusive and the translations appear to embody some choices about the meaning of the poetry. Each vignette is accompanied by some commentary. The commentary tradition for this work dates back centuries and the commentary sections summarize major points of view on each vignette-poem. The poetry reflects the complex ethos and politics of the Heian court. A great deal of the poetry is devoted to sexual escapades. Modern readers will be impressed with the rather predatory attitudes towards women. Very nicely illustrated with reproductions of prints illustrating the actions of vignettes.

While the previous translation of several decades ago is very valuable, translator Professor Mostrow is very skillful, as well as contributions by Royall Tyler.
