A Terrific Travel Book for Bibliophiles
By Chrissy1018
One of my favorite types of vacation is to travel to the homes of great authors. Not only do you get to know more about the authors themselves, but seeing where and how they lived often adds new insight into their works. That's why this aptly titled guide to literary places in the US is one of my all time favorite travel books.
It covers destinations all over the country, giving background of the author and property, as well as works written within the house, and special points to look out for. It also provides driving directions, and information on hours of operation and how to contact the property. It's lavishly illustrated with full color photos of the exterior and interior of the houses as well as pictures of each author. I always like to read the 2-3 page overview of a property just before I visit it to refresh my memory. It's also a larger-sized paperback that looks good on a coffee table for visitors to flip through.
I haven't yet been to all the properties listed, but I intend to. All sites are grouped by region, and there are additional pages of other literary places of interest in each area. The homes of Emily Dickenson, Mark Twain, Edgar Allen Poe, Washington Irving, Ernest Hemingway, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Nathaniel Hawthorne and Louisa May Alcott are included, among many others.

A combination of American literature, history, and travel
By Corinne H. Smith
By no means an exhaustive listing, this book highlights the birthplaces and residences of key 19th-century and early 20th-century American authors. The volume is arranged by geographic region, beginning in New England. The entry for each site includes photos and notes on architectural style, interior design, how long the author stayed there, who visited him/her, and what works were written there. A handful of authors are treated twice -- for example, Mark Twain is found in both Connecticut and Missouri, Edgar Allan Poe in both New York and Philadelphia, and Ernest Hemingway in both Florida and Illinois. True to the _Ideals_ layout style, the photos chosen are indeed lovely. One detraction is that the actual addresses, contact information, and driving directions are found in a separate section at the back of the book. A second possible problem is that the glued paperback binding might not stand up to repeated consultations during a long trip. Still, this title could be a useful tool when supplemented with a road atlas and a set of AAA guides.

This book is well-written, displels a lot of strange myths about native Pacific navigation, and provides a lot of interesting details useful to modern navigators when they run out of batteries in the middle of the ocean.

intriguing and eye-opening!
By David W. Straight
For most of us, sailing across 2000+ miles of open ocean from Hawaii to Tahiti (or vice versa) would be daunting enough even with using every modern navigation device such as a GPS. Consider that in 1927 with compasses, sextants, radio, etc, in the Dole Air Race from Oakland to Honolulu (the same distance as Tahiti to Hawaii) 3 out of the 5 planes that started out were lost at sea. Then consider that a thousand years ago the Polynesians in 50-foot twin-hulled canoes were regularly making such voyages without any kind of instruments, and that crossing 50 or 100 miles of ocean was thought almost trivially easy.

That a primitive (by European or American standards) people were skilled at ocean navigation was thought absurd. Kon-Tiki was an attempt to show that Oceania could be populated from South America by drifting on rafts and sheer luck of landfall. But it is now established that there was skilled and purposeful exploration and colonization--including Rapa Nui (Easter Island) which is 1000 miles from the nearest other habitable island. We, the Navigators is a fascinating look at "primitive" navigation techniques, and the author himself sailed from Hawaii to Tahiti using only these ancient techniques.

So you'll see how the Polynesians used the sun, moon, and stars to achieve accurate navigation. They also used the ocean swells (as distinct from waves): islands reflect and deflect swells, so by careful observation, you can get a sense of direction to landfall. Land also changes cloud patterns. Birds were watched intently. New Zealand was one of the last places found and peopled--from 1600 miles away from the northeast, perhaps by watching birds migrate in that direction. Different kinds of birds travel different distances from land--some travel 40-50 miles, others 20-25 miles: by observing at dawn where the birds came from, and observing which direction they went towards sunset, and seeing what kind of bird it was, you could tell that there was land, and what direction it was, and how far away it was as well. On leaving land, backsights would be taken to help establish currents and drift. The book has lots of drawings and illustrations--it's a real treat!

Embodied Nation: Sport, Masculinity, and the Making of Modern Laos (Southeast Asia: Politics, Meaning, and Memory), by Simon Creak

This strikingly original book examines how sport and ideas of physicality have shaped the politics and culture of modern Laos. Viewing the country's extraordinary transitions―from French colonialism to royalist nationalism to revolutionary socialism to the modern development state―through the lens of physical culture, Simon Creak's lively and incisive narrative illuminates a nation that has no reputation in sport and is typically viewed, even from within, as a country of cheerful but lazy people. Creak argues that sport and related physical practices―including physical education, gymnastics, and military training―have shaped a national consciousness by locating it in everyday experience. These practices are popular, participatory, performative, and, above all, physical in character and embody ideas and ideologies in a symbolic and experiential way.

Embodied Nation takes readers on a brisk ride through more than a century of Lao history, from a nineteenth-century game of tikhi―an indigenous game resembling field hockey―to the country's unprecedented outpouring of nationalist sentiment when hosting the 2009 Southeast Asian Games. En route, we witness a Lao-Vietnamese soccer brawl in 1936, the fascist-inspired body ethic of the early 1940s, the novel modes of military masculinity that blossomed with national independence, the spectacular state theatrics of power represented by Olympic-inspired sports festivals, and the high hopes and frequent failures of socialist sport in the 1970s and 1980s. Of central concern in Creak's narrative are the twin motifs of gender and civilization. Despite increasing female participation since the early twentieth century, he demonstrates the major role that sport and physical culture have played in forming hegemonic masculinities in Laos. Even with limited national sporting success―Laos has never won an Olympic medal―the healthy, toned, and muscular form has come to symbolize material development and prosperity. Embodied Nation outlines the complex ways in which these motifs, through sport and physical culture, articulate with state power.

Combining cultural and intellectual history with historical thick description, Creak draws on a creative array of Lao and French sources from previously unexplored archives, newspapers, and magazines, and from ethnographic writing, war photography, and cartoons. More than an "imagined community" or "geobody," he shows that Laos was also a "body at work," making substantive theoretical contributions not only to Southeast Asian studies and history, but to the study of the physical culture, nationalism, masculinity, and modernity in all modern societies.

Creak’s book … will be the authoritative account of this history for years to come. (New Mandala)

Review
This superb, well-written book shows how nationalism became embodied through state promoted physical practices promoting discipline. For those interested primarily in Laos, it is a treasure trove, showing how sport emerged from play and ritualised play to become a central metaphor of Lao nationalism. For those whose main interest is in sport theory, Creak supplies a wonderful case study that can be emulated. (Grant Evans, École Française d’Extrême-Orient, Laos)|Simon Creak’s outstanding and highly original study explores how colonial and pre-colonial conceptions of the body and sports contributed to the making of modern Laos and how physicality became a weapon in the cultural contests of the Cold War. This is a fascinating account of how colonial, national, and communist leaders used physical culture to embody quite literally their political projects throughout the twentieth century. Japanese Philosophy: A Sourcebook (Nanzan Library of Asian Religion and Culture)From University of Hawaii Press

With Japanese Philosophy: A Sourcebook, readers of English can now access in a single volume the richness and diversity of Japanese philosophy as it has developed throughout history. Leading scholars in the field have translated selections from the writings of more than a hundred philosophical thinkers from all eras and schools of thought, many of them available in English for the first time.

The Sourcebook editors have set out to represent the entire Japanese philosophical tradition―not only the broad spectrum of academic philosophy dating from the introduction of Western philosophy in the latter part of the nineteenth century, but also the philosophical ideas of major Japanese traditions of Buddhism, Confucianism, and Shinto. The philosophical significance of each tradition is laid out in an extensive overview, and each selection is accompanied by a brief biographical sketch of its author and helpful information on placing the work in its proper context. The bulk of the supporting material, which comprises nearly a quarter of the volume, is given to original interpretive essays on topics not explicitly covered in other chapters: cultural identity, samurai thought, women philosophers, aesthetics, bioethics.

An introductory chapter provides a historical overview of Japanese philosophy and a discussion of the Japanese debate over defining the idea of philosophy, both of which help explain the rationale behind the design of the Sourcebook. An exhaustive glossary of technical terminology, a chronology of authors, and a thematic index are appended. Specialists will find information related to original sources and sinographs for Japanese names and terms in a comprehensive bibliography and general index.

Handsomely presented and clearly organized for ease of use, Japanese Philosophy: A Sourcebook will be a cornerstone in Japanese studies for decades to come. It will be an essential reference for anyone interested in traditional or contemporary Japanese culture and the way it has shaped and been shaped by its great thinkers over the centuries.

Review
An outstanding sourcebook for all those interested in Japanese philosophy, as well as religious thought, social ideology, and artistic expressions stemming from the classical (Heian) and medieval ( Kamakura) through the early modern (Tokugawa) and modern (Meiji and post-Meiji) periods. . . . All readers of Japanese Philosophy will greatly benefit from and be gratified in finding authoritative versions of philosophical materials, offered in a creative, cross-thematic and historically based fashion. The reader may already be familiar with some of these resources, but may wish to reference or cite them anew, while other sections will provide original translations of philosophers with whom many readers may not yet be familiar or have not previously had an opportunity to reflect upon in depth or view in historical perspective. The Thematic Index is one of the excellent tools that will enable the reader to navigate a path through over twelve hundred years of philosophical writing in Japan. (Philosophy East & West)

This massive tome will stand for the forseeable future as the gold standard for comprehensive treatment of all matters of Japanese philosophy. The three editors, all significant names within this small but growing subfield, have assembled an impressive group of established and up-and-coming scholars to translate and provide introductions to each entry, resulting in a readable sourcebook remarkable in both scope and acuity of analysis. . . . Essential. (Choice)

A Great Reference
By Anton Sevilla
One of the difficulties that an English speaker might have in approaching Japanese philosophy is not really knowing where to start and who to work on. As one can see from the table of contents, Japanese philosophy is broad. There are communitarian thinkers like Watsuji Tetsuro, and there are individualist liberals like Fukuzawa Yukichi. There are the Zen Buddhist thinkers like Dogen and Shinran, and severe critics of Zen like Ichikawa Hakugen (who was in himself an incredible Zen man). There are both nationalists and people who got thrown in jail for their views against Japan. Oh and there are female thinkers too. So clearly, Japan outside travel guides is a complex place, difficult to reduce to stereotypes about nothingness, no-self, community, and nihonjinron (Japanese ethnocentrism).

But where does one start? Even if one can read Japanese, a non-native speaker would have a hard time just randomly going through dozens of thinkers trying to find who one finds really worth studying. And that is where I think this book is excellent. If you come across a name in a book or in a lecture, in minutes you can have a grasp of the basic approach of that person and his/her historical context. This book covers almost anyone of note in the history of thought. Spare half an hour and you can read a few selections from key works, translated in excellent and readable English. If you are convinced this person is worth reading, then you can head off to primary sources--likely in Japanese as many of the people taken up in the sourcebook have never been translated to English before.

The Japanese language is difficult, so is the philosophy, and put those two elements together and you have a very forbidding field in Japanese Philosophy. But it is the publication of books like these that make it possible both to research and to teach this subject in English.

Indispensible
By Michigan Rifleman
For anyone really wanting to read primary source material from Japanese philosophy, there is nothing better in the English language. Not a book for the timid or the dilatant. Well over 1000 pages of materials: a great wealth of reading.

Nice photos with generalized text
By Jack Holloway
THE BASICS:
softcover; 179 good color photos of 165 (63%) of Hawaii's species; includes 25 endemic species and 53 alien species; excludes extinct birds and the vagrants; a short paragraph gives a general description of the birds plus natural history notes; no range maps are included

THE REVIEW:
This new guide offers many good photos of the subset of birds expected to be found on the six main islands of Hawaii. In all, 165 (63%) of Hawaii's species are covered. The other 100 vagrant species and the several extinct birds known to occur on Hawaii are not addressed. Also not included are the four endemic birds for the outlying islands of Laysan (Laysan Duck and Laysan Finch) and of Nihoa (Nihoa Millerbird and Nihoa Finch).

Most of the birds are shown with a single color photograph which is typically of good quality in both color and size. While the individual photos are good, the selection of photos seems a little odd or, perhaps, inconsistent. With only one photo per bird for most of the species, a decision had to be made as to which plumage would be displayed. There seems to be no set strategy or decision regarding this. As an example, some of the ducks are shown with only a photo of the female while others are shown only as a male. Some are shown in breeding plumage while others are in eclipse plumage. This same mixture of plumages is also true for the many shorebirds: Some are shown in breeding and others in non-breeding, even when the migrant bird is present in Hawaii in both plumages.

The one-photo-per bird (for most of the species) creates a weakness with the gulls, terns, shearwaters, and boobies. There are a variety of plumages within these birds, but only the adult is shown. It would have been nice to show the very different immature plumage of the Red-footed Boobies that fly around in abundance, especially when these younger birds are often thought to be Brown Boobies by the less experienced birders.

However, I must give credit to the selection of five different photos for the various plumages of the Elepaio that are found on several of the Hawaiian islands. These plumages can be notably different from island to island. An honorable mention should also be given for a small inset photo provided for the differently plumaged juveniles of the Apapane and Iiwi.

Each bird receives a brief paragraph (7-14 lines) that provides a general description of the bird along with notes about the bird's natural history. This information consists of a mixture of habitat, population status, behavior, seasonal appearance, and introduction background. This information will provide the casual birder with a nice review of each bird.

The book is organized into five sections based on a general categorization of the environments where the birds are found. These five sectors are Urban, Country, Forest, Wetland, and Seabirds. A checklist is provided in the appendix, which nearly matches the birds shown in the five categories. I say "nearly" because the checklist includes a few additional birds that are mentioned but not illustrated in the book. Each checklist has a column for each of the six main islands that outlines the status and frequency of each bird.

There are no range maps for the birds, which I think is an oversight. Even though the checklist in the back shows the bird's presence on an island, the inclusion of even a small map with the appropriate island(s) colored in would have been very useful. One more map-related item that is missing is an introductory map to show the location or names of the islands mentioned in the book.

This book will certainly appeal to many birders who want to learn more about the birds of the islands. Since there are relatively few species of birds expected to be seen on each island, the photos will certainly aid with identification most of the time. For the more ardent birder, this book might be viewed only as another nice source of photos that mimics other similar books that illustrate the Hawaiian birds. This book is not a field guide. Instead, it is a nice photo guide to help become acquainted with Hawaii's birds. -- (written by Jack at Avian Review with sample pages, November 2009)

great photos
By Dan Lindsay
Some of the best photographs of Hawai`ian birds are included in this little volume, along with accurate and easy-to-read text. This is a very worthwhile addition to the small number of good Hawai`ian bird books.

The book's limitations include an absence of birds for which no photograph is available, including the enigmatic Nukupu`u and the inaccessible endemic birds of the Northwest Chain. Obviously, in a photographic guide there can be no pictures of birds which went extinct before good photographs were possible. But the quality of the photos given, and the excellent text, make this a valuable book both for the experience birder and the casual observer.

This book replicates the Audubon Society book "Hawaii's Birds"
By Jim C
When I saw this book had come out, I was excited that a new book building on the existing books regarding the birds of Hawaii - both pelagic and amazing endemic honeycreepers would be published. Compared to the mainland, I always thought the existing books regarding Hawaii's birds could be updated. The two mainstays are:

1. Pratts "A Field Guide to the Birds of the Tropical Pacific" published in 1987 which now appears somewhat dated with some of the honeycreepers shown in plates that do not appear lifelike and the pelagic birds shown flying either from below or above, not both.

2. The Audubon's Societies "Hawaii's Birds" which is a 5x7 photographic book of Hawaii's birds with typically one page per bird with one photo per bird.

Reviewing my copy of the Bird's of Hawaii, this book is essentially a larger version the Audubon book, but lacks the Audubon book's pictures of the birds that are recently thought to have gone extinct. It drives me crazy that a book on the birds of Hawaii devotes the same amount of attention to a house sparrow as compared to a 'Akiapola'au or 'Akohekohe - 1 page for each!? The book title specifically references offshore waters but over half the pictures (one picture per species) show a bird siting on the ground. I bought this book for expanded coverage on Hawaii's native birds and pelagics but all I received was a larger remake with new pictures, some better, some worse.

This book is larger in size than the Audubon book with about the same information and too big to be used a field guide so what niche was it expected to fill?

Can someone publish a new book on Hawaii's birds that includes the following:
1. More photos or pictures of the pelagic birds expected in Hawaii's waters including flying from above and below.
2. A Sibley-style field guide devoted only to Hawaii.
3. An expanded description, maybe 3 or 4 pages with more than 1 picture per species of Hawaii's great endemic forest birds.
4. Pictures of the birds that Hawaii has lost, both before cook and the Polynesians.

This book does not meet any of the criteria above.

Remembering the Kanji 1: A Complete Course on How Not to Forget the Meaning and Writing of Japanese Characters, by James W. Heisig

Updated to include the 196 new kanji approved by the Japanese government in 2010 as “general-use” kanji, the sixth edition of this popular text aims to provide students with a simple method for correlating the writing and the meaning of Japanese characters in such a way as to make them both easy to remember. It is intended not only for the beginner, but also for the more advanced student looking for some relief from the constant frustration of forgetting how to write the kanji, or for a way to systematize what he or she already knows.

The author begins with writing the kanji because―contrary to first impressions―it is in fact simpler than learning how to the pronounce them. By ordering the kanji according to their component parts or “primitive elements,” and then assigning each of these parts a distinct meaning with its own distinct image, the student is led to harness the powers of “imaginative memory” to learn the various combinations that make up the kanji. In addition, each kanji is given its own key word to represent the meaning, or one of the principal meanings, of that character. These key words provide the setting for a particular kanji’s “story,” whose protagonists are the primitive elements.

In this way, one is able to complete in a few short months a task that would otherwise take years. Armed with the same skills as Chinese or Korean students, who know the meaning and writing of the kanji but not their Japanese pronunciations, one is then in a much better position to learn the readings (which are treated in a separate volume).

Remembering the Kanji has helped tens of thousands of students advance towards literacy at their own pace, and to acquire a facility that traditional methods have long since given up on as all but impossible for those not raised with the kanji from childhood.

This Is Where You Start.
By Adversity
I have purchased this book a few months ago at the insistance of my brother to learn Japanese with him. The japanese culture has always fascinated me and I have always wanted to learn the language. However, a huge mass of people I know in person and through the internet have labeled japanese as a hard language to grasp, especially the kanji. If you are having trouble learning the language or you want to know where to start, then start with this book.

It had only taken me 11 chapters to notice that this was the best way to learn kanji and start the japanese language. This book when used in junction with the website and the flash card system, makes learning kanji not only easy... but fun. Its a simple idea where you use your imagination and combine kanji to make new kanji. There are about 2200 kanji in the book, but if you dedicate your time to it, it won't even take 3 months to learn the kanji and 6 months to have them fully memorized to recall.

When I say its easy, understand that it will take a little effort. You will have to study a bit and dedicate a lot of time to it. You are learning the meanings of the kanji and how to write them. You do not have to worry about gramnar or pronunciation yet. If you are wondering 'Why Buy This?', the answer is simple. It gets you over the huge and widely believed hugest hurdle of the japanese language. Start here and whevever you go from there is up to your own judgement. It is not an extremely easy process. It is however, not stressful or tedious at all. This is a 5 star product that everyone wishing to learn japanese should own. Whether for beginners or just for refrence, it is s must have in my opionion.

WARNING FOR KINDLE USERS!!!
By T. Ater
As of right now, the 7th of May, 2015 The kindle version of this book is useless. The system is supposed to work by showing you an individual kanji character, giving you a key word, and then showing you the order of the stroke used to draw/write the character. The first one (One) is correct, but starting with the next one, instead of showing the stroke order (in other words, instead of showing the correct way to write each kanji character) ther are just a bunch of random kanji character that have nothing at all to do with the one you are learning. Since you are supposed to write each one as you learn it, this makes the book useless. I will add a couple pictures as examples. I'm sure it can be fixed, but I ordered this a couple days ago, and the version I was sent was the incorrect version.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Let me state that as far as the book itself goes, it looks like a fantastic book with a great system, and I am very happy to pay for it and use it. It is JUST the Kindle version that has a problem, NOT a problem with the book or the system itself.

If I receive a corrected version of the Kindle edition, I will come back and fix this review. If you are wanting to learn Japanese, I will suggest you get this book, but for now order the paperback.

Great system, but depends on what you want to learn
By Sitting in Seattle
[I'm reposting this review from the previous version, as it keeps being republished for good reason. The review still applies.]

I've been using Heisig's book for about 7 weeks, and have "learned" 310 kanji during that time. I wanted to share some of my experiences and thoughts to add to the other thoughtful reviews.

First, by way of background, I experienced the "traditional" method of learning kanji when I studied Chinese a number of years ago. As Heisig notes in his introduction, that method involves learning characters in order according to how fundamental they are in language, and one learns the written character, pronunciation, grammatical details, and so forth simultaneously. The characters are learned purely by rote, and the pictorial aspects are not tied to anything systematic. My experience agreed with Heisig's notes: with nothing to anchor one's memory, it is nearly impossible to remember how to write the characters. I spent many hours a day practicing the characters to little avail and much frustration, and ultimately abandoned learning Chinese because I could not find the time to persist in that method.

When I decided to learn Japanese, the fear of chinese characters returned. How could I learn kanji when Chinese characters were an insurmountable obstacle in the past? Luckily, Heisig's book has been part of the answer. The key is that, instead of merely learning random markings, he lays out a system in which one uses imaginative associations. And, yes, it really works (at least for me). It is not difficult to "learn" 20-30 kanji per day, given an available hour or two of time.

Now, a few things have to be said. First, in his system, to "learn" a kanji means simply to learn two things: (1) how to write it; (2) a single key meaning. There are many other things that one does not learn (in volume 1 of his system): (3) pronunciation (that's in volume 2); (4) alternative meanings, which are multiple for most kanji; (5) compounds with other kanji; (6) anything about usage or grammar. That is by design, as Heisig notes that learning to write the kanji is the most important barrier for westerners. He specifically designed the system to lower that hurdle as low as it can be, and that meant that the other aspects of kanji are postponed.

The value of this system depends on one's goals, schedule, and related activity. First, Heisig notes that his system should be completely separated from any other simultaneous activity to learn kanji. It is NOT intended to be a supplement to a second or third year Japanese course, for instance. Further, it is not designed to progress from common to less-common, like many kanji books. Rather, it bunches kanji together solely on the basis of how easy they are to learn together. This implies that the course must be completed -- or very nearly completed -- to get most of the benefit. That implies a certain schedule, namely, to persist until one is done.

In terms of goals, the system works well for some goals: (a) learning to write the basic kanji in a short amount of time, so one can devote study to grammar and other matters; (b) rapidly developing an extremely rudimentary reading ability, where "reading" means "occasionally figuring out a few words, but mostly just being able to have some visual memory for kanji when confronted by them"; (c) laying a foundation for other study of Japanese when one has an enforced break of at least a few months; (d) learning the kanji because they're fun, as a supplement to kana-based Japanese classes (i.e., prior to starting kanji formally); (e) breaking the language down into parts that are more suitable for self-study. Those are my goals, and I suspect the goals of many other adult western learners of Japanese.

There are other goals that I believe are not well-suited to this system: (f) supplementing an intermediate or advanced Japanese language course where you're learning kanji otherwise (Heisig's book could, however, fill in a break in such instruction); (g) rapidly developing basic reading fluency, i.e., in relation to word frrequency or importance; (h) serving as a text for classroom; (i) reviewing or learning grammar.

One thing that I would highly recommend: get the flash cards in addition to this book. Yes, it is possible to make your own, but as other reviewers have noted, that is an unpleasant exercise. In addition, it is error-prone: if you don't know how to write the kanji well, the flash cards are likely to drill poor representations of the kanji. I would also note that Heisig's cards have other valuable information. First, they have cross-references to some common kanji dictionaries for westerners, so it is easy to look up a kanji in those when the key word meaning or stroke order is unclear. Second, they have pronunciation information to complement volume 2 of his system.

Finally, it should be obvious but I'll state it anyway: no book can do the hard work of learning a language for you. Heisig's system has given me what I needed to get over the very high hurdle of learning to write kanji, but it still takes a great deal of patience every day. You have to sit down and practice and review the flash cards, and his book, over and over. For me, it requires at least a few hours per week, in 30 minute pieces here and there -- but mostly it requires patience and diligence. Good luck!
