Down-to-earth history book free from Nationalistic crap!

This book reveals the prosaic origins of the splendid East Asian civilization, free from all those Nationalistic myths which artificially stretched the histories of the member countries back by thousands of years.
The East Asian civilization is already splendid as it is, and doesn't need embellishments. One doesn't need 'histories' of the ancient Sage Emperors of the pre-Shang, nor the glories of ancient Choson, mythical Emperors of Japan, or of Vietnam that are being taught as 'history' in their respective countries. Indeed harking back to these myths are evidence of the insecurity of these Nationalists.
This book traces the development of the East Asian civilization from its neolithic roots, through its Bronze Age, the mutual influence of the various peoples of the land, and the impact of the Han & Tang Dynasties on state formation in Japan, Korea and Vietnam. It also traces the amalgamation of the various Altaic, Sino-Tibetan and Austroasiatic tribes in the vast region into what eventually became the Chinese, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese people. I found it most intriguing.

Really Good Book

This is a really good book that every Asian Studies student should own. It actually looks at all East Asia civilizations, not just China and Japan. Holcombe's skilled at hightlighting the connections between the East Asian societies, and paints a picture of interconnected, yet distinct cultures. Highly recommended.

How East Asia Formed

When people think of East Asia, a lot of times China is one of the first countries that come to mind. Yet East Asia is as diverse as the East Asians who inhabit those countries and the book Genesis of East Asia seeks to explore that. True to its title, author Charles Holcombe's text examines the origins of East Asian civilization from the founding of the Chinese empire to the end of the Tang dynasty, alternating between looks at internal politics and international relations and studies how the development of the Chinese state influenced the evolution of Japan, Korea, and Vietnam. At the heart of his book lies the Sinicization thesis, which Holcombe modified to make it as free of the ethnocentric myths and biases that had become attached to it over the course of centuries as possible by drawing upon many primary and secondary sources. The end result is a book that takes a very broad topic and breaks it down into easy to understand yet interesting and educational components.
Holcombe draws a distinction between political confederations, nationalities, and ethnicities and goes into detail about how each East Asian state developed and affected one another. That being said, I believe Holcombe's book was a success in terms of asking a question and answering it in an academic way with support from primary and secondary sources. Despite an apparent bias due to most sources being written in classical Chinese and a lack of maps, Holcombe's end work definitely reflected on the research he had to do to make this book a reality and this book is highly recommended to all who is interested in studying how East Asia came into being.
