Good for getting deeper

I've been learning Vietnamese for about three years. It's a difficult language to get a Western mind and mouth around but this book has helped me get a deeper understanding of structure, grammar and pronunciation.

Thompson's Vietnamese Reference Grammar withstands the test of time

Over a half century after it was written, this book remains the only linguistically sophisticated reference grammar of Vietnamese written in English. For the serious student it is a helpful adjunct to any of the textbooks used to teach this language at the university level and includes useful sections on Vietnamese dialect variation and the writing system.

A solid linguistic survey.

I'm a native speaker of Vietnamese, though being born and raised (and more importantly, educated) entirely in the U.S., English is now by far my dominant language. I appreciate the linguistically-informed approach that this nonetheless very readable text takes. Thompson describes, in-depth, pronunciation (even including less widely-spoken dialects, which warmed my heart—most sources act like Hanoi speech is the be-all, end-all Platonic ideal), syntax, and pragmatics.
Mind, there are no exercises. This is not a workbook, nor an interactive reader. As someone who is now trying to formally supplement a weird quasi-heritage/fluent-but-only-in-certain-domains Vietnamese background, I haven't been able to find a more comprehensive resource. I'm not sure if it would be right or exceptionally helpful for an entirely L2 learner, but I bet it can't do any harm.
Some of the phonetic notation is no longer standard, and the typeface combined with poor printing makes it annoying to look at sometimes, but I'm more than content with the material.
