From Publishers Weekly
The two loversboth university studentsin this novel face many cultural difficulties. She is a white New Zealander, blonde, outgoing, daughter of a successful businessman; he is the son of xenophobic Somoan immigrants to New Zealand, dark, reticent and bitter about his tenuous position as a "coconut islander" in white society. Indeed, this is also the story of two conflicting South Pacific nationsNew Zealand and Samoawhose inhabitants tend to translate racial pride into racist contempt for others. Told in the flat, passionless voice of the nameless boy, this allegory, rich in both history and geographic detail, demonstrates the problems of cultural cohabitation. Though his writing is slightly uneven and too often cliched, Wendt, a native Samoan and professor of literature, offers a fine, compassionate tale.

Great read
By Graham Beaumont
Really reminded me of many issues from NZ as I was growing up and also from when I first visited Samoa. He is a great writer/poet and has put "Samoan Aotearoans" on the map!

Daughter wants to return home
By Maureen Unasa
Thank you Professor for a very emotional read and distinguishing for me some of my own judgements I had growing up. It was interesting that my experience (and also for those around me) was similar in the late 70's/early 80's. Is it fair then, to say that regardless of what time or era your migration occurs the experiences will be similar. I was literally taken back in time to my own experience and had to stop myself from getting caught up in my emotions so I could continue reading.

Laughing (mainly) but a few sad moments provided a roller coaster read.

I guess my high school english teacher could see that I needed some guidance when using one of your books (not sure if it was this one or "Leaves of the Banyan Tree")as a study topic. Maybe if I listened and actually read it, then I would have realised that I wasn't unique in my thoughts.

I am extremely happy that I have some writers for my own children to identify with and read the amazing stories provided. I know it will provide my children with a little insight to what it was and is like migrating to foreign surroundings.

I have recently taken my children to Samoa and they absolutely love it there and want to return to live. I'm quietly ecstatic because I feel drawn back to Samoa and look forward to returning.

Thank you so much for the gift of your books. It really has opened up many doors for me (even though some of them are only in my head at the moment)
I am about to read, "Leaves of the Banyan Tree" and "The Mangos Kiss".

Maureen
