China’s historical women warriors hailed from the northeast (Manchuria) during the Liao (907–1125) and Jin (1115–1234) dynasties. Celebrated in the Liao History, they were "unprecedented." Women of the Conquest Dynasties represents a groundbreaking effort to survey the customs and lives of these women from the Kitan and Jurchen tribes who maintained their native traditions of horsemanship, militancy, and sexual independence while excelling in writing poetry and prose and earning praise for their Buddhist piety and Confucian ethics. Although much work has been devoted in the last few years to Chinese women of various periods, this is the first volume to incorporate recent archaeological discoveries and information drawn from Liao and Jin paintings as well as literary sources and standard historical accounts.
Conquest women combined agency and assertiveness drawn from steppe traditions with selected aspects of Chinese culture such as ethics and literacy. Empress Chengtian led Liao armies to victory against the Song, successfully ran the state for thirty years during her son’s reign, and enjoyed a lengthy and public liaison with her prime minister. Empress Yingtian, the wife of the Liao founder and his assistant in military affairs, famously refused to comply with the steppe custom of following one’s husband in death; instead she cut off her right hand and placed it in the late emperor’s coffin as a promise to join him later. These confident and talented women were rarely submissive in matters of sexuality and spouse selection, but they were subject to the restrictions of marriage and the levirate if widowed.
The women of the northeast stand in vivid contrast to their counterparts in the south, where female identity was molded by a millennia of Confucian ethics and women were increasingly sequestered in the home and constrained by concepts of virtue. Women of the Conquest Dynasties provides new insights into the history of steppe patterns of feminine behavior and will reveal new areas of comparative study.

Lacks analysis

Women of the Liao and Jin Dynasties is somewhat of rare topic in Chinese history. Johnson's book is fortunate to have the aid of recent excavations, or else her book would have been quite a repetition of Jennifer Holmgren's work. Much information is provided regarding tomb excavations, either artifacts or tomb art. However, analysis is lacking from this author, she fails to put together a comprehensive picture of what her sources tell her. One major enlightenment from this book is that Empress Chengtian and Han Derang were buried together, thus verifying the rumored romantic relationship cited in historical accounts written by Song scholars.
The organization of the book is also quite scattered. One suggestion is that the individual tombs may be designated its own chapter, in discussion of its artifacts and analysis.
The major bulk of the book is focused on the Liao empresses, only Yang Miaozhen is considered from the Jin, though she was ethnically Han.

Role models for Modern Chinese Women

This book was published in July 2011, and I recently bought it on Amazon, and was overall quite pleased, despite it being rather academic, and a short 160 or so pages (pre-notes). As the book flap states this is an attempt to study the lives of some famous women in the Liao (907-1125) and Jin (1115-1234) dynasties. This is interesting on several fronts, as the Liao and Jin dynasties have often be portrayed as a the villains in Chinese historical narrative, preying upon the weakened Song Dynasty. Its inhabitants were often seen as utterly barbaric, even though the Liao dynasty eventually reached the same levels of cultural development as the Song, but managed to retain a hybrid culture. This book goes significantly towards setting the record straight.
The Women described in this book were celebrated in the Liao History and were "unprecedented." They rode horseback astride, were good at hunting and shooting, and took part in military battles. Several empresses--and one famous bandit chief--led armies against the enemy Song state. They provided a sharp contrast to the female exemplars of Confucian culture in the Song, many of whom were bound by strict Confucian mores with strictly circumscribed areas of action. These women were skilled cultural mediators, promoting the administrative and literary skills and the Empress Yingtian was also instrumental in creating a written Khitan language. Yet at the same time were able to maintain their native traditions of horsemanship, militancy, and sexual independence and demonstrate independent leadership and personal bravery while excelling in writing poetry and prose and earning praise for their Buddhist piety and Confucian ethics.
However, as mentioned previously the book is written in a dry dispassionate style with ample footnotes and numerous reference to textural and tomb findings which are beneficial to the researcher. But I believe that the book could have been much more than that, as the lives of these women seem to beg for a more lively treatment (perhaps in a future historical novel form?) and provide an alternative set of role models for modern Chinese women based on historical role models. Indeed this is similar to the argument that Jiang Rong makes in his famous semi-autobiographical novel Wolf Totem, that we have much to learn from the people of the steppes.
