Adapted for the Screen: The Cultural Politics of Modern Chinese Fiction and Film, by Hsiu-Chuang Deppman

Contemporary Chinese films are popular with audiences worldwide, but a key reason for their success has gone unnoticed: many of the films are adapted from brilliant literary works. This book is the first to put these landmark films in the context of their literary origins and explore how the best Chinese directors adapt fictional narratives and styles for film.

Hsiu-Chuang Deppman unites aesthetics with history in her argument that the rise of cinema in China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan in the late 1980s was partly fueled by burgeoning literary movements. Fifth Generation director Zhang Yimou's highly acclaimed films Red Sorghum, Raise the Red Lantern, and To Live are built on the experimental works of Mo Yan, Su Tong, and Yu Hua, respectively. Hong Kong new wave's Ann Hui and Stanley Kwan capitalized on the irresistible visual metaphors of Eileen Chang's postrealism. Hou Xiaoxian's new Taiwan cinema turned to fiction by Huang Chunming and Zhu Tianwen for fine-grained perspectives on class and gender relations. Delving equally into the individual approaches of directors and writers, Deppman initiates readers into the exciting possibilities emanating from the world of Chinese cinema. The seven in-depth studies include a diverse array of forms (cinematic adaptation of literature, literary adaptation of film, auto-adaptation, and non-narrative adaptation) and a variety of genres (martial arts, melodrama, romance, autobiography, documentary drama). Complementing this formal diversity is a geographical range that far exceeds the cultural, linguistic, and physical boundaries of China. The directors represented here also work in the U.S. and Europe and reflect the growing international resources of Chinese-language cinema.

With her sophisticated blend of stylistic and historical analyses, Deppman brings much-needed nuance to current conversations about the politics of gender, class, and race in the work of the most celebrated Chinese writers and directors. Her pioneering study will appeal to all readers, general and academic, who have an interest in Chinese literature, cinema, and culture.

Review
"This eye-opening and engaging work . . . provides an excellent introduction and critical gateway to late-20th-century China-related cinema. . . . Highly recommended."  ----Choice (48:3, November 2010)

"Deppman's book is the first to take us deep into the field to examine the complex ecology in which Chinese literary texts and Chinese film cross-pollinate and bear fruit. Her discerning eye makes the reading of her book a worthy and enjoyable experience." --Xiao Jiwei, Fairfield University

"This excellent book is nuanced in its readings, sophisticated in its employment of literary and film theory, and clearly and elegantly written... It is sure to set the standard for a generation.." --Christopher Lupke, Washington State University

"Adapted for the Screen is an innovative and engaging work that offers nuanced and insightful readings of cinematic adaptations of literature...The book is of great research and pedagogical value and is highly recommended to researchers, teachers, and graduate and college students interested in cinema and literature."--Zhuoyi Wang, Hamilton College

From the Back Cover
"Hsiu-Chuang Deppman's ambitious book investigates the complex associative and conceptual interaction between literature and film, arguing that in many cases, a structural connection underlies the relationship. Her work is a strong challenge to those who believe literature and film should always be regarded as completely separate and unrelated. Deppman's fascinating chapter on the hip Wong Kar-wai and his debt to novelist Liu Yichang well illustrates the way in which directors can play with and play off of narrative structures, in the process setting up a provocative intersection." --Wendy Larson, University of Oregon

"This excellent book is nuanced in its readings, sophisticated in its employment of literary and film theory, and clearly and elegantly written. The author is at ease not only in her analysis of a short story or novel but with formal and poststructural film analysis as well. The book is sure to set the standard for a generation of scholars interested in the question of how fiction and visual culture interact and overlap." --Christopher Lupke, Washington State University

This volume is a translation of Le Fin de l’innocence? L’islam indonésien face à la tentation radicale de 1967 à nos jours, which was published to wide acclaim in 2006. It offers a unique overview of the role of Islam in Indonesian politics over the past few decades, paying close attention to the varying fortunes of key Islamist movements. The final chapter takes into account events that have taken place and publications that have appeared since 2006.

The Best Book on its Subject, Crisp and Focused Writing Never Drags
By JFMP
For those who are interested in this subject, look no further. This is the definite, most up to date book on Indonesian Islam and the ideological currents that influence it. Unlike others who have tackled this subject recently (e.g., Ricklefs), The End of Innocence is concise (336 p.), focused and what's more surprising for a translated book, beautifully written and organized.

There is a modicum of historical perspective, but the bulk of the material centers around the waning days of the Suharto (New Order) era, and the advent of democracy (Reformasi). Relevant to all the religious challenges facing Indonesia today.

Transformative Journeys: Travel and Culture in Song China, by Cong Ellen Zhang

During the Song (960-1279), all educated Chinese men traveled frequently, journeying long distances to attend school and take civil service examinations. They crisscrossed the country to assume government posts, report back to the capital, and return home between assignments and to attend to family matters. Based on a wide array of texts, Transformative Journeys analyzes the impact of travel on this group of elite men and the places they visited.

In the first part of the book, Cong Ellen Zhang considers the practical aspects of travel during the Song in the context of state mobilization of and assistance to government travelers, including the infrastructure of waterways and highways, the bureaucratic procedures entailed in official travel, and the means of transport and types of lodging. The second part of the book focuses on elite activities on the road, especially the elaborate farewell banquets, welcoming ceremonies, and visits to famous places. Zhang argues convincingly that abundant travel experience became integral to Song elite identity and status, greatly strengthening the social and cultural coherence of the practitioners. In promoting their experience of traveling across a large empire, Song elite men firmly established their position as the country’s political, social, and cultural leaders. The literary compositions and physical traces they left behind also formed an overlapping web of collective memories, continually enhancing local pride and defining the place of various localities in the cultural geography of the country.

Transformative Journeys sheds new light on the nature of Chinese literati, their dominance of culture and society, and China’s social and cultural integration. Those interested in premodern China and travel literature will find a wealth of material previously unavailable to Western readers.

Chinese travelers in the medieval period
By E. N. Anderson
This excellent book covers every imaginable aspect of travel in Song China (960-1279). Its only problem is the inevitable one that we have little evidence other than the records of highly literate officials. Few others were writing back then. The book therefore covers, especially, poetry and officialdom. To make up for it, Song writers were often compulsive beyond belief. One of the lead characters in this book, Lu You, boasted of having written more than eleven thousand poems. (He kept count.) Many of them concern travel. Therefore, many poems appear in this book, and they are usually beautiful and very ably translated. An interesting point is that most of the star characters here were leading moral philosophers as well as poets, and their views transformed a good deal of Chinese culture; it is therefore of some special interest to see what they made of endless travel to various new or different official posts--or to exile, since their outspoken and high-minded views were not popular with certain emperors.
Otherwise, the book covers everything you might want to know about Song travel. Means of travel included boats, sedan chairs, foot, horses, donkeys--the donkey being a symbol of humility. Inns could be private or public, luxurious or filthy and lice-infested. Safety could be compromised by bandits, storms, and wild beasts--one scholar awoke to find a tiger prowling around the flimsy hut he was inhabiting. (I know how it feels. I've had hippos and hyenas right outside the tent in Africa.) Compensations included rounds of parties for every leavetaking and returning--those Chinese poets drank a lot. There is surely exaggeration going on, but having been to countless Chinese parties, I can testify that they are not necessarily the height of sobriety. I wonder how the officials ever got any work done.
This is a wonderful book that throws a great deal of light on a previously understudied part of Chinese history. It is light on high theory, but all the better for that. It reflects life, and also the values of the scholars in question.

New God, New Nation: Protestants and Self-Reconstruction Nationalism in Korea, 1896-1937 (Hawai'i Studies on Korea), by Kenneth M. Wells

The history of modern Korea reveals a search for cultural identity through nationalism. At the close of the 19th century, the kingdom of Korea became a battleground between China, Japan and Russia. While Korean traditionalists and modernist factions vied for power, the country increasingly fell prey to Japanese colonial designs, culminating in its official incorporation into the Japanese empire in 1910. In the context of this loss of political and cultural autonomy, some Koreans turned to Protestantism, and to the associated ideas of the nation-state as a source and model for a new Korea. Previous studies of nationalism in Korea have tended to cast their analyses in terms of the polemics of Korean nationalists, distinguishing nationalist factions through the lenses of resistance and collaboration. Elucidating the crucial linkage between Protestantism and nationalism, this book instead sets the introduction of new religious ideas firmly within the wider cultural struggle of the time, exploring their function as both a means of counteracting imperialism and as the framework for a new national ideal. The book shows how Korean Protestant nationalists based an idealist model of cultural transformation on their central thesis of the ethico-spiritual origins of nationhood. Drawing on a range of materials in Korean, Sino-Korean, Japanese and English, and on his expertise in the areas of nationalism, socialism and Christian theology, Professor Wells provides the serious reader with an intriguing account of the involvement of Protestants in the burning issues of modern Korea. His thorough and sensitive handling of the complexities of Korea's search for national identity challenges many common assumptions and opens new paths for future studies. This book is intended for students and researchers in Asian studies and sociology of religion. "Professor Ken Wells is currently teaching in the Department of East Asian Languages and Cultures at Indiana University in the USA.". This book is intended for students and researchers in Asian studies and sociology of religion.

A Lucid Study of Korean Christian Nationalism
By A Customer
New God, New Nation: Protestants and Self-Reconstruction Nationalism in Korea, 1896-1937 covers an important period in modern Korean history, that is unfortunately both highly pertinent and politicized. Wells investigates the historical, economic, and ideological confluence of protestant Christian theology and nationalistic movements in Korea between the end of the Choson dynasty and the Japanese colonial occupation. Examining various Christian nationalist leaders, such as Cho Man-sik, Yun Chi'ho, and Syngman Rhee, Wells concludes, that the relationship between religion and nationalism is problematic.
More than Wells's ultimate thesis, the book is a lucid, much needed study of the limitation of Korean nationalism in the face of Korean and Japanese resistance. The study includes a discussion of the March First movement and the rise of socialist alternatives to Christianity. Wells attempts to defend Korean nationalism for its apolitical nature, while stressing the difficult task of creating Christian communities by reconstructing moral individuals from the bitter, forlorn Korean masses. Wells also examines the practical sphere of cultural nationalists, like Kim Sonsu, who prospered in business, but were accused of collaboration with the Chosen Government-General. Briefly, he also examines the role of foreign missionaries in the major Korean communities.
Although the book is concerned with a theological subject, namely, the relationship between nationalism and religion, it is more helpful as a Korean history text. The dearth of good English-language materials with access to Korean-language sources frustrates a balanced and non-politicized discussion of Korean development. Wells's portraits of numerous Korean nationalists are fair and illuminating. Wells also advances the thesis, that both the New Village Movement (sae maul undong) and the Self-Sufficiency (juche) ideology are offshoots of the reconstruction ideology.
This book is for advanced students of Korean studies and theology, not for beginners. It is also well-written, but fortified with some precise argumentation only experts would appreciate. But for those with a good knowledge of Korean history history, theology, and economics, it is a fresh glance at a very important chapter in Korean history. It is also a window on current events on the peninsula, which does not seem to have advanced much beyond 1937.

Three-Dimensional Reading: Stories of Time and Space in Japanese Modernist Fiction, 1911-1932From Yiu, Angela (EDT)

A 29th-century dystopian society seen through the eyes of a mutant-cum-romantic poet; a post-impressionist landscape of orbs and cubes experienced by a wandering underdog; an imaginary sick room generated entirely from sounds reaching the ears of an invalid: These and other haunting re-presentations of time and space constitute the Japanese modernist landscape depicted in this volume of stories from the 1910s to the 1930s.

The fourteen stories selected for this anthology―by both relatively unknown and “must-read” authors―experiment with a protean modernist style in the vivacious period between the nation-building Meiji and the early years of Showa. The writers capture imaginary temporal and spatial dimensions that embody forms of futuristic urban space, colonial space, utopia, dystopia, and heterotopia. Their work invites readers to abandon the conventional naturalistic approach to spatial and temporal representations and explore how the physical and empirical experience of time and space is distorted and reconfigured through the prism of modernist Japanese prose.

An introduction and prefatory materials provide historical and critical context for Japanese modernism, making Three-Dimensional Reading a valuable teaching text not only for the study of modern Japanese literature, but for world literature, global modernism, and utopian studies as well. The volume also includes drawings by contemporary artist Sakaguchi Kyōhei, whose ability to create a stunning visual reality beyond the borders of time and place is a testament to the power and reverberations of the modernist imagination.

Erotic Grotesque Nonsense -- what could be more irresistible?
By Guttersnipe Das
Three Dimensional Reading:
Stories of Time and Space in Japanese Modernist Fiction, 1911 - 1932
Angela Liu, editor
Sakaguchi Kyohei, illustrator
University of Hawai'i Press, 2013

"Interwar", it seems to me, has got to be the most depressing adjective of all time. Yet phenomenally interesting things may seize the chance to be born in times of peace, and the Taisho Era was an extraordinary time. This is not a book of museum pieces however, but a collection of fabulous strange stories, superbly illustrated. This is "ero-guro-nansensu" - and "erotic grotesque nonsense" never goes out of style.
As a non-academic reader and fan of Japanese literature, I want to say that this book is too marvelous to leave to the scholars and their libraries. I am exceedingly grateful to the University of Hawai'i Press, and to the community of scholars that made this book possible. But please, don't let the academic air dissuade you - this is a phenomenal collection of stories. The scholars can explain why these stories are important - I would only like to add that they are also a fabulously good time.

Three Dimensional Reading is a collection of strange stories that bend time and space, as well as form and, occasionally, gender. (Angela Liu, the graceful editor, explains that the title refers to Rittai-ha, the name for Cubism in Japanese.) Only two of them have been previously translated. Although I found all the stories engaging and necessary, there were five I especially loved.

Predictably, two of my favorites were by my very favorite Japanese writers: Inagaki Taruho and Kajii Motojiro, neither one of whom has a full length collection available in English - a fact which seems to me unconscionable and which I hope will soon, at last, be remedied. Kajii Motojiro, who died young of tubercuslosis, wrote stories rooted in his own precarious existence. He wrote of his depression and illness -- yet somehow his despair, rather than sealing him off from the world, delivered him to it.

I've never read anyone like Inagaki Taruho, that exceedingly playful magician. He is the Ted Berrigan of Japanese literature - everyone wants to read him, yet no publisher will bring him back into print. Tricia Vita's lovely translation of 1001 Second Stories was in print for approximately 20 minutes. Only the rich can afford it now. Jeffrey Angles' translations are masterful and brilliantly annotated - yet they remain scattered in academic publications. Can't a publisher finally come to the rescue? "Astomania" alone is worth the price of this book.

Ryutanji Yu has never before been translated into English - he lost a literary battle with Kawabata and retreated to writing about cactuses - but his story here, "Pavement Snapshots", is as compelling as an old box of photos found buried in the earth. Reading this story led me to ponder the effects of time on literature. I imagine this story seemed clever when it was written - and perhaps a little dull fifteen years later. Now, however, when the world it describes has entirely disappeared, this story is phenomenally interesting. Its stark style makes it somehow convincing, like an old newsreel. I hope very much that there is more Ryutanji to translate.

As a fan of Akutagawa, I was surprised that I'd never seen "Wonder Island" before. A light, inverted and heavily vegetarian version of his famous story "Kappa", this story is essential. Like many of the stories in this book, it conveys an extraordinary sense of liberty and freedom. You can hear the author's fist on the desk as he declares, Dammit, I'm going to write exactly the way that I choose. This sense of daredevilry is conveyed by the translators, no small stunt in itself.

The story I loved most of all in this book was Sato Haruo's A Record of Nonchalant. I read it with my mouth open thinking, "He cannot possibly actually get away with this." It is a mad story about a civilization where the privileged live in skyscrapers and the dispossessed live underground in the dark. For one afternoon the downtrodden are allowed to surface - only to be blanketed with flyers asking them to volunteer to be transformed into houseplants for the rich. The main character promptly agrees and winds up a rosebush.

OK, forgive me, maybe I'm nuts, but, as far as I'm concerned, this story is about as much fun as it is possible to have in literature. Seeking a frank opinion, I passed "A Record of Nonchalant" to a 15 year old who assured me, "You're not just a freak. That story rocks."

Overall, the collection is stunningly rich and full of interest. You will no doubt find your own favorites. Just as translation is an art, so, too, is the writing of notes and introductory material. Although some of the translators are masterful in introducing and annotating their work, I occasionally felt that I was being bullied and told what to think. Thus, I suggest reading the introductory material to each story AFTER the story itself. Skimming, too, remains a non-punishable offense in all nations. (That said, the generous notes to Tanizaki's "A Golden Death" are a complete education and are perhaps slightly more fun than the story itself.)

I hope this rich and delightful book will open the door to more translations of Japanese modernism and "erotic grotesque nonsense". While translators as good as these are available, I hope they find more opportunities. (And, please: can they all be illustrated by Sakaguchi Kyohei? He deserves some sort of medal for "bravery with a felt tip pen". His meticulous and dizzying illustrations are world-class.) As a fan of daring literature, this book was the most dazzling event in a long time. I only hope another party like this one will soon come along.

Local Story: The Massie-Kahahawai Case and the Culture of History, by John P. Rosa

The Massie-Kahahawai case of 1931–1932 shook the Territory of Hawai‘i to its very core. Thalia Massie, a young Navy wife, alleged that she had been kidnapped and raped by “some Hawaiian boys” in Waikīkī. A few days later, five young men stood accused of her rape. Mishandling of evidence and contradictory testimony led to a mistrial, but before a second trial could be convened, one of the accused, Horace Ida, was kidnapped and beaten by a group of Navy men and a second, Joseph Kahahawai, lay dead from a gunshot wound. Thalia’s husband, Thomas Massie; her mother, Grace Fortescue; and two Navy men were convicted of the lesser charge of manslaughter, despite witnesses who saw them kidnap Kahahawai and the later discovery of his body in Massie’s car. Under pressure from Congress and the Navy, territorial governor Lawrence McCully Judd commuted their sentences. After spending only an hour in the governor’s office at ‘Iolani Palace, the four were set free.

Local Story is a close examination of how Native Hawaiians, Asian immigrants, and others responded to challenges posed by the military and federal government during the case’s investigation and aftermath. In addition to providing a concise account of events as they unfolded, the book shows how this historical narrative has been told and retold in later decades to affirm a local identity among descendants of working-class Native Hawaiians, Asians, and others―in fact, this understanding of the term “local” in the islands dates from the Massie-Kahahawai case. It looks at the racial and sexual tensions in pre–World War II Hawai‘i that kept local men and white women apart and at the uneasy relationship between federal and military officials and territorial administrators. Lastly, it examines the revival of interest in the case in the last few decades: true crime accounts, a fictionalized TV mini-series, and, most recently, a play and a documentary―all spurring the formation of new collective memories about the Massie-Kahahawai case.

Introduction

Let’s Speak Indonesian: Ayo Berbahasa Indonesia is an introductory text that guides the learner from the novice to the intermediate-high level of Indonesian oral proficiency skills using the communicative approach. The communicative pedagogical framework results in a text that is designed for in-class use, not for individual (self) study. Each lesson teaches several language functions or speech acts, thereby enabling the student to communicate in a variety of social contexts. While teaching oral communication, the text also addresses the three modes of communication, i.e., the interpretive, interpersonal, and presentational, promoted by the Standards movement. Students listen and interpret the dialogues presented at the beginning of each lesson, engage in interpersonal communication via role-play exercises and group work, and
finally make presentations based on group discussions.

Classroom Interaction

The text is written to create a student-focused classroom where students playan active and central role in classroom interactions, while the teacher is the facilitator and consultant. Most class time is devoted to pair or group work with students interacting primarily with each other. Second-language acquisition research has shown that students learn best when they are actively engaged in “real” communication and when they are at ease with their conversational
partners. Thus, the two benefits derived from the student-centered classroom are that the students have more time to actively participate, and they are more relaxed, speaking with peers rather than with the teacher.

The materials are rich with illustrations, diagrams, and photographs in order to bring Indonesian culture to the student and to diminish the need for translation during the process of language acquisition. In the early lessons, cognates from English are occasionally used instead of more commonly used Indonesian terms in order to avoid translation. The objective here is to give the beginning language learner confidence in his/her ability to understand Indonesian without the aid of an English translation and to develop his/her learning strategies for tolerating ambiguity and guessing from context. The practice of using English loan words in the early lessons rapidly decreases as the learner gains control of more Indonesian vocabulary. To aid the transition to Indonesian in the classroom, the student instructional language for the exercises is given in

English for the first four units; it then shifts to Indonesian once the students are comfortable with the format and types of exercises used in the text.

Finally, the text is designed for Indonesian to be the medium of instruction in the classroom. In order to maximize the time spent by students in meaningful communicative tasks, students come to class prepared, having read the lesson objectives and the cultural notes. Since the primary objective of this text is to teach oral proficiency, not grammatical accuracy; the teacher should not be overly concerned about student “mistakes.” With sufficient comprehensible input and practice, students will acquire the correct language patterns.

Instructors are encouraged to use other teaching materials that are specifically designed to develop grammatical accuracy.

The Teacher’s Role

Despite the student-centered management strategy, the teacher’s role remains crucial; at the beginning of a lesson, the teacher introduces the lesson and guides the students through any preparation needed for the lesson’s objectives. Then, while the students are engaged in small-group work, the teacher circulates around the class to keep the students on task, offering help to those who need it, observing common problems, and assessing learning progress. At
the end of the group work, the teacher will often bring the class back together for group reports, a class check on the lesson’s objectives, a description of homework assignments, or plans for the next day. Small-group reporting from the ayo berkomunikasi exercises is especially useful and interesting to the whole class because students are inherently interested in the meaningful exchanges of their peers. Since some of the ayo berkomunikasi tasks entail homework, such lessons can not be completed until the next class session. Prior to the lesson, students should familiarize themselves with the lesson objectives by reading the English-language segments of the lesson and listening to the dialogue.

The Organizing Principle of the Text

This book consists of fifteen thematic (topical) units that address the speaking (functional) needs of the novice to intermediate learner and the interests of university students. Research studies have demonstrated that using functional topics rather than grammatical structures as the organizing principle yields far better results when one is learning oral proficiency skills. The fifteen thematic units of the two-volume text begin with topics about the self such as making acquaintances, visiting friends and family, and daily activities; they then move on to topics of more general interest such as hobbies, eating out, shopping, and studying at the university; finally, they shift to topics of wider social interest such as travel, health issues, career goals, Islamic rituals and celebrations, and work. Each thematic unit is opened with a photograph to contextualize

the topic; note that the photograph does not represent the characters or specific settings discussed in the lesson. Within each unit there are three lessons, each of which teaches four or five language functions or speech acts. A speech act is an utterance that accomplishes a social task; e.g., speech acts are used to offer a greeting, make a request, or register a complaint. The speech act may be one word or a sentence or two. For example, in English an apology may be
the one word “Sorry” or the two sentences, “I’m sorry I forgot your birthday. It just slipped my mind.” Learning which speech acts are appropriate in different social contexts requires learning the social and cultural rules of a society. A student of English, for example, would need to learn when the appropriate greeting is “Hi” as opposed to “Hello. How are you?”

Each lesson has the following structure:

■ In this lesson you will learn: A list of the language functions taught in the lesson.

■ Dialog: A presentation of the language functions in context with accompanying digitized conversations.

■ Persiapan (optional): A pre-teaching of key vocabulary items.

■ Ayo Berlatih: A set of exercises to develop accuracy in using the language functions.

■ Ayo Berkomunikasi: A set of exercises to develop fluency in using the language functions in communicative contexts.

■ Kosakata: A list of the key, new vocabulary items with their English translations.

■ Cultural Notes: Notes to aid the student in understanding the cultural context as well as the cultural values and beliefs implied in the dialogue.

In this lesson you will learn: This segment presents a list of the language functions and examples of them in Indonesian. For example, two of the language functions in lesson one are how to greet people at different times of the day and how to make (and accept) an offer. After studying the lesson, the student should be able to use all of the language functions listed in this section in personalized and communicative contexts.

Dialog: Each lesson begins with a conversation in which the language functions are presented in a culturally appropriate context so that the students can derive the meaning of these language functions from the context. In addition, the students learn intonation and stress patterns and the appropriate language use for different social relations from the dialogue. The dialogue is then followed by a set of questions or activities to check comprehension.

Persiapan (optional): This section is included whenever there is new vocabulary or a concept that is crucial to the lesson that needs pre-teaching. For example, in lesson 1.1, the times of the day in Indonesia are presented in this section so that the student will be able to accurately and appropriately use the Indonesian greetings specific for the different times of the day. In this section, illustrations and/or diagrams are frequently used in order to facilitate comprehension without the use of translation.

Ayo Berlatih: This section offers a set of controlled exercises where the student develops accuracy in using the language functions. At this point the student exercises are more mechanical (although they are not substitution drills) to allow the student to build accuracy in using the language pattern. While the lesson’s ultimate objective is to teach communicative language use, at the beginning stages the student must develop accuracy while building the underlying skills of pronunciation, intonation, syntax, and sociolinguistic appropriateness. The student must first demonstrate some control over the pattern before using it in an open-ended, communicative task. Thus, in order to balance the need for both accuracy and fluency, the ayo berlatih section precedes the ayo berkomunikasi section. In both of these sections, students work in pairs or in small groups (often 3–5 people) performing the activities. The teacher can determine the number in the small groups depending on class size.

Ayo Berkomunikasi: This section offers a set of more open-ended communicative tasks to develop fluency in using the language functions. As the students gain control over the language patterns, they are given more challenging tasks that require them to create meaningful language exchanges. Often the activities in this section involve an information gap where the students are forced to exchange information and create answers. Other questions are open-ended; thus, the students are forced to create appropriate answers. The teacher should encourage the students to produce as much language as they can; the answer’s length and content will vary, reflecting the personal backgrounds of the students. The ayo berkomunikasi section allows the student to develop fluency while using the language to communicate personal messages where the primary focus is on the meaning and not on the form of the language exchange. Of course, there will be mistakes, but students need time to practice expressing their own thoughts in order to effectively learn the language. There will be other lessons in the curriculum that focus on grammatical accuracy.

Kosakata: The vocabulary list in each lesson includes important terms that appear in the dialogue and the exercises but have not appeared previously in the text. Vocabulary items that have already appeared in prior lessons will not be included in the kosakata but will be accessible in the glossary. Items found in the directions for exercises or in the teacher instructional boxes are not included in the kosakata. In the first six units the vocabulary items are listed as they appear in the dialogue or the exercises (i.e., in the derivative form). For example, if the word membantu is used, it will appear as membantu in the vocabulary list rather than merely in the root form of the word, bantu. In the glossary, root words are listed followed by the derivative forms that have been used in the text and their definitions. In addition, translations of the vocabulary items given in the lessons are those which are context appropriate to the lesson. For example, in lesson 1.2 apa is used as a yes/no question marker; thus, the definition is given as such. The translation of apa as “what” is not given here but only later in the lesson where that meaning is taught. In the

glossary, all of the common meanings for a word are given.

Cultural Notes: These notes present the social, cultural, and/or political context of the meanings of words or phrases so that the student can acquire a deeper understanding of how the language is used in a particular context. An understanding of the cultural context broadens the student’s understanding and aids in his or her overall language learning.

The Variety of Indonesian Used in the Textbook

The variety of Indonesian language used in this text is a relaxed variety of standard Indonesian that is often used by the educated middle class when speaking with strangers. The local, ethnic languages around the country affect how Indonesian is spoken around the country. Since this text cannot teach the numerous local varieties of Indonesian, nor do we wish to teach a formal, bookish Indonesian, we have selected this relaxed variety of Indonesian that does not characterize any one locale, but rather is found throughout the country in contexts where strangers or people from different language areas converse. While most of the dialogues use an informal register, some are set in more formal contexts, demanding a more formal register. Thus, register variation, which is an important aspect of Indonesian, is taught in a number of the later lessons. Although authentic dialogues would ideally be used in an oral proficiency textbook, because of the necessity for controlling for language functions, syntax, and vocabulary, we offer semi-authentic, scripted dialogues composed by native speakers. One final note: popular, colloquial varieties of Indonesian such as bahasa gaul are not taught in this text. The authors believe that an introduction to bahasa gaul would make a wonderful addition to a curriculum for advanced speakers, but at the introductory level it is important to build a foundation based on an informal variety of standard Indonesian.

"this little board book depicts the real meaning of Christmas and the events surrounding the birth of the Christ child.
By Gail Welborn
O Little Town of Bethlehem, a colorful and robust musical board book, celebrates the story of Christ's birth in both word and song. The sing-a-long melody plays with a simple push of the bright red button on the front and the batteries are replaceable. Sturdy pages designed with curious youngsters in mind won't tear or be harmed by constant use.

Simple and brightly colored pictures illustrate the town of Bethlehem, the animals and Joseph and Mary snug in a stable looking down on their newborn son as "Christmas angels, the great, glad tidings tell."

Charming, sweet and innocent this little board book depicts the real meaning of Christmas and the events surrounding the birth of the Christ child.
