fantastic book! screw the rest, this is it.

I've tried other books, and honestly, i love this one the best.

I learned, in the first few lessons, things i never learned in my 2 years of slow, independent studies ( i still study independently) and since i got this book, my motivation for cracking down, and the pace at which i'm learning the material has increased substantially.

The book teaches you hang'l in the beginning, but it's up to you to memorize it and get used to it yourself ( i was already familiar but struggling to read well) because it does not use romanization at all in the lessons, but this is what i was looking for, because i wanted a book that made me do the hard work and get used to reading hang'l, so that i could begin recognizing whole words right away instead of taking it syllable by syllable. I now read almost 10 times as fast since i started using this book. My reading and writing skills with hang'l are much more proficient. Also, when they DO use romanization, in the rare case, they use McCune-Reischauer, which i find to be the most logical and effective way to read romanized korean with fluidity and ease.

Perfect for self-instruction or just overall learning!

This book is thorough and simple in it's explanation of all the key points of the language. Each chapter contains two sets of written dialogues. This allows to illustrate how the upcomming grammar is used and applies in everyday conversations. It demontrates the new vocabulary after each dialoge and uses the rest of the chapter to explain the function, purpose, and meaning of the grammar as well as the proper way to use it. Sometimes the book will use an example as to what is wrong and why.

I'm using this book for a course, but I firmly believe it's constructed in a way that students could use it for their own auto-didactic purposes. Aside from the workbook the text book contains plenty of interactive exercises so the reader can practice as much as needed with proper examples right in front of them. There is no answer keys to these examples as the book mainly assumes the activities are done in class with a partner or two. That doesn't make the learning process any effective.

The book is pretty sturdy for a paperback. I purchases mine brand new and found a tiny drop of dried black substance on the page. I think this was an error on the publishers behalf and not the shippers.

If anyone is looking for an easy-comprehendable way to learn Korean I reccommend this publisher's line of textbooks. I've been studying Japanese for 6-7 years now and Korean for only two semesters. My Korean foundation is far more stronger than that of my Japanese because of thise textbooks simple and yet effective way of breaking down the grammar, its meaning, its uses, as well as how to properly fit them into a sentence.

Although this is a very comprehensive and well written book (probably the best out there) there are no answers to the questions. Ultimately, it's useless for self learners. In order to get the answer key you have to request it through the author/publisher. I've waited nearly 3 weeks with no response. Unless you have a private tutor or Korean friend to check your work these books are absolutely useless.

Throughout he engages insights drawn from structuralism, post-structuralism, and Actor-network theory to retrieve the “implicit pantheon” (as opposed to the “explicit orthodox pantheon”) of esoteric Japanese Buddhism (Mikkyō).

Through a number of case studies, Faure describes and analyzes the impressive mythological and ritual efflorescence that marked the medieval period, not only in the religious domain, but also in the political, artistic, and literary spheres. He displays vast knowledge of his subject and presents his research―much of it in largely unstudied material―with theoretical sophistication. His arguments and analyses assume the centrality of the iconographic record, and so he has brought together in this volume a rich and rare collection of more than 180 color and black-and-white images. This emphasis on iconography and the ways in which it complements, supplements, or deconstructs textual orthodoxy is critical to a fuller comprehension of a set of medieval Japanese beliefs and practices. It also offers a corrective to the traditional division of the field into religious studies, which typically ignores the images, and art history, which oftentimes overlooks their ritual and religious meaning.

The Fluid Pantheon and its companion volumes should persuade readers that the gods constituted a central part of medieval Japanese religion and that the latter cannot be reduced to a simplistic confrontation, parallelism, or complementarity between some monolithic teachings known as “Buddhism” and “Shinto.” Once these reductionist labels and categories are discarded, a new and fascinating religious landscape begins to unfold.

Great prayer book for toddlers and above

My daughter (3 years old) is a huge Veggie Tales fan. I wanted to start praying with her at night but was a little unsure how to go about it. I got this book and I'm so glad I did. The prayers all rhyme and are grouped by category: bedtime prayers, gratefulness, blessings for dinnertime, etc. There are six or more prayers on each two-page spread, which makes this book a hefty read. What I do is, read one prayer from each page to shorten it up. When my little girl has a longer attention span, I'll read each prayer to her. I like that this book has us praying together and that the prayers are short and simple enough for her to understand. I would definitely recommend this book---I've yet to be disappointed by a Veggie Tales book!

Great addition to our bedtime routine

My son is 5 and he enjoys reading this before bed. It's a great way to teach your child different things to pray for. The book is sectioned by topic and each topic is about 2 pages. Also the board book makes it very durable as my son likes to take his books to bed with him.

Impeccable scholarship and a ton of fun to boot!

King and Tranquada worked for years on this book, and the love, care and devotion they put into it shine on every page. (The footnotes alone are worth the price of admission.) Even if you don't play 'ukulele -- heck, even if you have no interest in music at all -- you'll find this extremely-well researched effort to be a wonderfully entertaining trip through over 120 years of American and international history and culture. The reader effortlessly rides the "waves" of 'ukulele popularity and ubiquitous-ness that followed, or in many cases led, world-altering events such as the U.S.'s annexation of Hawaii, the commercial worlds' fairs of the late 19th and early 20th Centuries, World War I, the Depresssion, World War II, and the successive emergences of popular sheet music, records, radio, television, and now the internet. While some of it is "old hat" (but really well-told old hat) for 'uke afficionados, a lot of the information is of the "who knew?" variety, including mention of the 'ukulele and professional baseball players, and the 'ukulele and the young Prince Edward (later Duke of Windsor). And very artfully and entertainingly written is how the 'ukulele, which once represented everything that was kitschy and co-opted about the Hawaiian Islands, later came to be a symbol of the emerging indigenous Hawaiian civil rights and social justice movement. Sadly, Mr. King -- himself a superb 'ukulele musician -- didn't live to see the book published, but his spirit certainly lives on in it. And if you're a non-musician who reads this book, my bet is that your next shopping stop after Amazon will be to your local 'ukulele store.

To anyone who is passionate about the history of the Hawaiian Ukulele, this book is the book
you have been waiting for. It is a fitting memorial to John King's extraordinary dedication
in mapping out the Journey of the ukulele's invention.

The detail of his research is forensic. The footnotes alone are completely invaluable to
any historian or enthusiast.

The internet is awash with potted histories which have little value and are full of inaccuracies.
Forget about them and enjoy a real authoritative and fascinating story of how
a diminutive four-stringed, figure of eight, koa wood chordophone conquered the world.

Congratulations to Jim Tranquada for seeing this project through.

I've been playing the ukulele for about 12 years and have seen all kinds of books and info. I am very involved in the ukulele scene in So. Cal particularly at an ukulele "mecca" called Island Bazaar in Huntington Beach. I have seen NOTHING as educational and inspirational as this book. It was given to me for Christmas and I have now purchased 10 and given them as gifts to my uke friends.
During visits to the Ukulele Guild Exhibition in Honolulu I had the real pleasure of seeing and hearing co-author John King (recently deceased) talk about the ukulele and perform. He was simply a genius. This book reflects that. Take a look at this scholarly work......HALF of it is footnotes and index!!! But it reads like a novel. The two authors set up the milieu of where the ukulele came (Madiera/Portugal) from and the setting it came to (Hawaii). Then they magically take you through the journey of this amazing instrument to the U.S. Mainland and through the decades. It's wonderful. And the photos and graphics are soooo fun and informative. There are lots of turn-of-the-century photos, ads, posters that make this history come alive. The reader is taken through all the ups and downs of the popularity of the ukulele, right up to the explosion that is happening today.
Like I said, I have seen NO other source that so entertainingly shows the ukulele and all its practitioners through the years. Wonderful. That's why I am giving this as gifts to all my friends interested in this special diminutive instrument.

No other civilization in the premodern world was more obsessed with constructing underground burial structures than China, where for at least five thousand years people devoted a great amount of wealth and labor to build tombs and furnish them with exquisite objects and images. The hope of providing the dead with an eternal home stimulated artistic creativity and technological innovation, making the tomb a persistent site of art production as well as a comprehensive ensemble of various art forms. For the most part, tombs have been mainly appreciated as "treasure troves," the contents of which has allowed art historians to rewrite histories of individual art forms such as bronze, jade, sculpture, and painting. But tombs have served this role at the expense of being fragmented in both preservation and analysis: The integrity of a tomb is obscured when it dissolves into medium-oriented classification and research.

New trends in Chinese art history are now placing the entire burial (rather than its individual components) at the center of observation and interpretation. The present book takes this to the next level by focusing on interpretive methods. It argues that to achieve a genuine understanding of Chinese tombs we need to reconsider a host of art historical concepts (including visuality, viewership, space, formal analysis, function, and context) and derive an analytical framework from the three most essential aspects of any manufactured work: spatiality, materiality, and temporality. Chapters discuss the symbolic environments constructed inside a tomb and the "subject spaces" created for the disembodied soul; how and why certain materials, mediums, shapes, and colors were selected for tomb architecture and furniture; and lastly how spaces, objects, and images work together to evoke temporalities such as past, future, or eternity and generate a sense of movement inside a sealed space. The final coda brings all of these threads together in a portrayal of three important tombs from different periods.

The best primer available - highly readable

"Religion in Contemporary Japan" is a highly enjoyable, informative and surprisingly readable book on the somewhat obscure subject of religion in contemporary Japan. As an MA student studying religion in Japan, this book was recommended as a starting place, and I found it invaluable.
Ian Reader lays out how religion is treated in Japan, what its general effect is on everyday life, and explores some of the more hidden corners of the Zen Buddhist temples and the new-new religions. Don't expect information on doctrines or specifics of any particular religion. This is far more of a sociological treatment than a theological one.
Of particular interest, I enjoyed his comments on the holy sites of Japan, and how they have been transformed to serve tourist interests. Also, his insights into the modern religion of Agonshu are very interesting, and highlights the modern "invention of tradition" found in Neo-pagan religions in the US. I found it interesting that this same phenomenon, of trying to link back to a mythical past, also existed in Japan.
Specific areas touched upon are "Turning to the Gods in times of trouble," "Unifying Traditions, " "Born Shinto, Die Buddhist," "Individuals, Ascetics and Expressions of Power," "Sites and Sights," "Actions, Amulets and the Expression of Meaning," "Spirits, Satellites and a User-friendly Religion."

I had to buy this book for my Japanese Religions class. I found it very informative and easy to read at times. All the statistics sounded fine and quite contemporary.

I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in understanding the Japanese ...

I first heard Ian Reader on an interview on NPR and this is the first book of his that I've read. At this point I'm about 1/2 way through the book. I'd recommend this book for anyone interested in understanding the Japanese Culture. This is a view of the way the Japanese think of religion and full of info I don't think I would have found otherwise. It's well written and surprisingly easy to read for what one would think of as a very dry subject.

Usually linked to the propitiation of plague gods and the worship of popular military deities, such ritual practices have an obvious but previously unexamined kinship with the traditional Chinese martial arts.

The long and durable history of martial arts iconography and ritual in Chinese religion suggests something far deeper than mere historical coincidence. Avron Boretz argues that martial arts gestures and movements are so deeply embedded in the ritual repertoire in part because they iconify masculine qualities of violence, aggressivity, and physical prowess, the implicit core of Chinese patriliny and patriarchy. At the same time, for actors and audience alike, martial arts gestures evoke the mythos of the jianghu, a shadowy, often violent realm of vagabonds, outlaws, and masters of martial and magic arts. Through the direct bodily practice of martial arts movement and creative rendering of jianghu narratives, martial ritual practitioners are able to identify and represent themselves, however briefly and incompletely, as men of prowess, a reward otherwise denied those confined to the lower limits of this deeply patriarchal society.

Based on fieldwork in China and Taiwan spanning nearly two decades, Gods, Ghosts, and Gangsters offers a thorough and original account of violent ritual and ritual violence in Chinese religion and society. Close-up, sensitive portrayals and the voices of ritual actors themselves―mostly working-class men, many of them members of sworn brotherhoods and gangs―convincingly link martial ritual practice to the lives and desires of men on the margins of Chinese society. This work is a significant contribution to the study of Chinese ritual and religion, the history and sociology of Chinese underworld, the history and anthropology of the martial arts, and the anthropology of masculinity.

A fascinating, impressive work.

Avron Boretz lived among the men on the fringes, to make this book. He participated in the religious rituals, the martial arts, and the various low-life activities that make up the jianghú. You may have seen that word before, especially if you've watched wuxia movies; "jianghú" is often translated as "the martial world," in which kung fu societies struggle for dominance, often trying to preserve a master's secret martial style.

But the real-life jianghú, as this book shows, is much more interesting than the simplistic, romanticized vision of Jin Yong and the others. For the men on the margins, low-level criminality, kung fu fights, exorcising ghosts, and womanizing, are acts that transform a failed life into a legend.

These men and their world are fascinating; Boretz's means of analysis are sophisticated; and I wanted the book to go on and on.

Really enjoyed reading this, but...

This book is definitely only going to be enjoyed by people interested in the particular subject it covers, mainly temple culture in Taiwan and to a certain extent mainland China,.

Mr. Boretz does a great job of giving us insights into this often overlooked part of traditional Chinese culture, especially as it has survived and thrived in Taiwan and how it's been repressed and re-invented in mainland China. Not just that, but it also gives a great look into the traditional Chinese concepts of masculinity and honor and how they relate to martial culture and ritual violence.

At times it reads much like an academic piece of work that should be read just as reference, especially at the beginning, it's rather "dry". However, the best parts of the books is when Mr. Boretz talks about his firsthand accounts of his experiences working/performing with a temple troupe and the stories he's told by his different informants (that are within the temples he's researching) about a variety of subjects, ranging from funny anecdotes to tragic histories.

It's worth reading if you're just curious about the subject, but it's definitely worth it if you do research and/or want to have a greater understanding of temple culture or Din Tao aka Zhen Tou (temple performance troupes) as well as how ritual violence fits within traditional Chinese culture.

I would recommend this especially for people who study traditional Chinese martial arts and/or Lion Dancing if they are interested in understanding the roots of many traditional practices and concepts found within their martial/performance studies.

"Gods, Ghosts, and Gangsters" is a work of poetry, storytelling and ethnography - not as different components, but fused into a single mode of composition. Even the compromises necessary to a university press publication (academic protocols) don't really get in the way of this amazing series of narratives and reflections. Full disclosure: I am the author's father and watched this text evolve from start to finish - but I don't hesitate to speak as a fascinated reader to anyone who might be interested.
