Well-written outstanding history

Once I got past the rather flowery introduction about Magellan's sighting an discovery of Guam, I found this a fascinating, well-written, well-dcoumented and well-researched book. It takes the reader through the discovery phase, Spanish colonial phase (and predictably brutal) the governing role of the US Navy, the Japanese occupation and finally, the American invasion to free Guam and the associated governmental transfer from the US Navy to the Department of the Interior.
Certain recurring themes are summarized since the "post-contact" history of Guam from the 16th century to the present. These are:
.
1). Close ties between Guam and Philippines.
2).. Guam's geopolitical role in support of imperial interest in Western Pacific (I.e Spain, US, Japan, US).
3). Christiinity - Roman Catholicism became abiding spiritual heritage of the people of the Marianas (including Guam), particularly for Chamorros (Original inhabitants frompre-contact days)
- Patron system - privileges and elitism
- Pare system - family ties and macho enthusiasm for military service,.
4). Sheer incompetence of governments (Spanish, Japanese, US (both times>
5). Chamorro people became peripheral in political and economic development of island under colonial military government.

Bob Rogers offers an insightful and gripping view into the history of the island where America's day begins. Rogers' thorough research shows as he takes the reader from the landing of Magellan, right up through the modern day issues and struggles of this tiny, yet action packed island. Roger's fluid style coupled with his amusing stories of such things as "the big, ugly dinnerboat" that sits in Tumon bay, make for a thoroughly enjoyable read. If you are looking for one book that will give you all you need to know about the history of Guam, look no further.
