I'm Aboriginal. I'm just not the Aboriginal person a lot of people want or expect me to be.
What does it mean to be Aboriginal? Why is Australia so obsessed with notions of identity? Anita Heiss, successful author and passionate campaigner for Aboriginal literacy, was born a member of the Wiradjuri nation of central New South Wales, but was raised in the suburbs of Sydney and educated at the local Catholic school. She is Aboriginal; however, this does not mean she likes to go barefoot and, please, don't ask her to camp in the desert. After years of stereotyping Aboriginal Australians as either settlement dwellers or rioters in Redfern, the Australian media have discovered a new crime to charge them with: being too "fair-skinned" to be Australian Aboriginal. Such accusations led to Anita's involvement in one of the most important and sensational Australian legal decisions of the 21st-century when she joined others in charging a newspaper columnist with breaching the Racial Discrimination Act. He was found guilty, and the repercussions continue.
Am I Black Enough for You? is a deeply personal memoir, told in her distinctive, wry style, Anita Heiss gives a first-hand account of her experiences as a woman with an Aboriginal mother and Austrian father, and explains the development of her activist consciousness.
Read her story and ask: what does it take for someone to be black enough for you?

Comments for this item are not related to the book
By Sharon Lane
Everday book purchasers on the Amazon site must be quite confused with regard to the degree of viciousness, narrow-mindedness and bigotry in the comments on Am I Black Enough For You?. Just to put it in context, the vast majority of people who have left comments here are listeners of Andrew Bolts (low rating) radio program. Andrew Bolt is an Australian right-wing, conservative 'radio personality' who was charged with racist comments following complaints by Anita Heiss and others, who DID NOT seek damages, but did seek an apology and costs. Bolt was found guilty of the charges under the Racial Discrimination Act, not surprisingly as he has an appalling history of racism against Aboriginals, he is also a denier of the Stolen Generation....think Holocaust . He has also been convicted of defamation. When Anita Heiss's book was published Bolt encouraged all of his equally rabid listeners to bombard the Amazon site with their own particular brand of vitriol. Unfortunately that is largely what you see here now. The majority of Australians are deeply embarrassed by these rants, particularly as the commentators seem to think that Anita is responsible for removing their free speech Haha! They truly don't realize that the Racial Discrimination Act had done that long before....Accountability and punishment is hard to accept when there are now consequences for bullying, racism, defamation and nastiness after generations of normalizing such behaviours.
PS. Buy the Book...its a great read and an excellent representation of what Australian Aboriginals....(of all skin tones and geographical locations) have to put up with.

Divisive, hypocritical victimhood
By TraddyCatholic
Go and do something productive. You're as black as Obama is white, he is American, you are Australian. Stop "celebrating" sugary diversity and embrace unity.

Tokenism
By Baldrick
Aboriginal tokenism by a token aboriginal living off the public teat ... and the question her book poses is illegal for anyone to answer, in Australia.
