A well Cited review from Cambridge Org and my own opinion.

Research in Mahayana sutras is a slow and painstaking process. Typically, it involves a careful study of multiple versions of individual texts, composed in different languages (Sanskrit, Chinese and Tibetan) as well as immersion in the voluminous but largely unchartered corpus of canonical literature preserved in the bKa' 'gyur and the Chinese `Tripi[tdotu ]aka'. Years may easily go by without any noteworthy publication. Thus, when a new book appears, scholarly expectation tends to be high. Jan Nattier's study of the Ugrapariprccha is no exception. Eagerly awaited among colleagues for its research on early Mahayana Buddhism - the Ugrapariprccha is widely recognised to rank among the first Mahayana sutras - Nattier's work promised to dispel at least some of the mist that continues to cloud this ill-understood period. Even though hers is not the first study and translation of the Ugrapariprccha (Nancy Schuster wrote her PhD dissertation on this text, 1976), Nattier managed to produce a remarkable, original piece of scholarship that brims with thought-provoking ideas about the formation of the Mahayana, persuasive refutations of old-seated misconceptions, well-conceived approaches to textual interpretation and a competently crafted translation of the Chinese and Tibetan versions. In short, it is a book that needs to be taken seriously.

I really like this book. It is a great presentation
of life in a Buddhist Community circa 100 CE.
Extremely well researched. As has been said, old and
well accepted theories of the Mahayana vs Theravada
are exposed with well placed arguments and suggestions.
That is the main focus of this book, more factual History.
By no means dry or boring imho. The US published book
is of great quality and production, more than a fair price.
Although this could and maybe is used as a Text book,
unlike many I have had to read, this does not come off
as a stuffy, self congratulatory work.
Imho, the book is not so much a revelation of a Sutra as the in depth study
of It's origin and the actual climate, if you will, of the Community
in which this movement manifested. Unique in that sense of it's arena of focus and study.

Decent information but flawed

The information presented here is decent, but it's too reliant on prejudices and assumptions. That is to say, it presumes a supposed dichotomy between monastic groups and Mahayana teachings, and presents Mahayana as an "embattled minority" within monasteries, despite offering insufficient evidence to support that claim. The information about the Ugradatta Pariprccha is certainly valuable information, but it's stretched too far. We have to remember that this is simply one text out of hundreds, and it's an atypical text at that. To assume that it is representative of "early Mahayana," whatever that might entail, ignores the complex and multifaceted history of the subject. In one place it may have been mainstream, and in another it may have been marginalized. The conflicts we see reflected in the texts may be between monastic groups rather than within monastic groups, etc. The author is clearly knowledgeable and intelligent, but the downfall of this book is that it takes the narrow perspective. The author wants the subject to be simple and easy to understand, when clearly it is not. In the end, the reader doesn't get much closer to the truth of the matter.
