Wonderful intro to Martin Luther King Jr for toddlers/preschoolers
By Nonfiction
This book is a great introduction to Martin Luther King Jr for toddlers/preschoolers. It helps explain to the youngest children not only important details about Dr. King's life but also serves as a starting point for discussing racism and prejudice. These topics are shown in ways that are very easy for a young child to understand--a nicer, newer playground for the kids at the white school--for instance. It does skip over Dr. King's assassination which I think is completely age appropriate. The illustrations are very cute as well. My 3 year old requests this book often.

A Good Toddler Book about MLK
By Katie
This is a really great book for introducing a part of history that is less than pleasant to a toddler. I don't know how to explain about our country's history of racism and segregation and how we needed heroes, like Martin Luther King Jr, to help everyone improve things to a toddler. This book gave us a good start.
I appreciate that it didn't discuss his assassination, a sad but important part of history that she'll learn about when she's older. I also really like that it ends by talking about how Martin Luther King, Jr. made his dream come true and you can make your dreams come true too.
I also like how it gently lists some injustices he experienced and how that made him angry, the word "angry" is in a bigger font than the rest of the text on that page. Then it talks about what he did about it. We're working on being aware of our emotions and responding correctly. What an important lesson for a child, to see how Martin Luther King, Jr. took his righteous anger and used it to make the world better. The book just wouldn't be as good if it didn't mention that he felt angry at how he was treated.

Telling the Tale
By The RAWSISTAZ Reviewers
Parents quite often want to begin to teach their children about important aspects of
history and culture even at the earliest of ages. This book is the perfect avenue
through which parents can begin teaching their children about Martin Luther King and
the Civil Rights Movement.
Moore has done a superb job in writing a biography that is short, concise and easy to
understand. Even children with the shortest of attention spans can enjoy and understand
this book. Friendly illustrations will make this book even more pleasurable for
children. The boardbook format of this book makes it easy for children to handle
the book and even turn the pages without parents having to worry about the book being
damaged.
