I ordered this book to learn more about Julene figurines. I am reading it from the beginning. It has beautiful color pictures of various Hawaiian art objects from paintings to whale teeth. A great way to learn about Hawaiian history.

Of these sources, medieval Chinese hagiographies are by far the earliest and most abundant.

Conceiving the Indian Buddhist Patriarchs in China is the first attempt to situate the medieval Chinese hagiographies of Aśvaghoṣa, Nāgārjuna, and Āryadeva in the context of Chinese religion, culture, and society of the time. It examines these sources not as windows into ancient Indian history but as valuable records of medieval Chinese efforts to define models of Buddhist sanctity. It explores broader questions concerning Chinese conceptions of ancient Indian Buddhism and concerns about being Buddhist in latter-day China. By propagating the tales and texts of Aśvaghoṣa, Nāgārjuna, and Āryadeva, leaders of the Chinese sangha sought to demonstrate that the means and media of Indian Buddhist enlightenment were readily available in China and that local Chinese adepts could thereby rise to the ranks of the most exalted Buddhist saints across the Sino-Indian divide. Chinese authors also aimed to merge their own kingdom with the Buddhist heartland by demonstrating congruency between Indian and Chinese ideals of spiritual attainment. This volume shows, for the first time, how Chinese Buddhists adduced the patriarchs as evidence that Buddhist masters from ancient India had instantiated the same ideals, practices, and powers expected of all Chinese holy beings and that the expressly foreign religion of Buddhism was thus the best means to sainthood and salvation for latter-day China.

He demonstrates that modern modes of transportation and communication not only brought the Dutch colony of Indonesia into the world economy, but also stimulated the emergence of new art forms and modern attitudes to art, disembedded and remoored traditions, and hybridized foreign and local.

In the nineteenth century, access to novel forms of entertainment, such as the circus, and newspapers, which offered a new language of representation and criticism, wrought fundamental changes in theatrical, musical, and choreographic practices. Musical drama disseminated print literature to largely illiterate audiences starting in the 1870s, and spoken drama in the 1920s became a vehicle for exploring social issues. Twentieth-century institutions―including night fairs, the recording industry, schools, itinerant theatre, churches, cabarets, round-the-world cruises, and amusement parks―generated new ways of making, consuming, and comprehending the performing arts. Concerned over the loss of tradition and "Eastern" values, elites codified folk arts, established cultural preservation associations, and experimented in modern stagings of ancient stories. Urban nationalists excavated the past and amalgamated ethnic cultures in dramatic productions that imagined the Indonesian nation. The Japanese occupation (1942–1945) was brief but significant in cultural impact: plays, songs, and dances promoting anti-imperialism, Asian values, and war-time austerity measures were created by Indonesian intellectuals and artists in collaboration with Japanese and Korean civilian and military personnel. Artists were registered, playscripts censored, training programs developed, and a Cultural Center established.

Based on more than two decades of archival study in Indonesia, Europe, and the United States, this richly detailed, meticulously researched book demonstrates that traditional and modern artistic forms were created and conceived, that is "invented," in tandem. Intended as a general historical introduction to the performing arts in Indonesia, it will be of great interest to students and scholars of Indonesian performance, Asian traditions and modernities, global arts and culture, and local heritage.

Kyoto was Japan’s political and cultural capital for more than a millennium before the dawn of the modern era. Until about the fifteenth century, it was also among the world’s largest cities and, as the eastern terminus of the Silk Road, it was a place where the political, artistic, and religious currents of Asia coalesced and flourished. Despite these and many other traits that make Kyoto a place of both Japanese and world historical significance, the physical appearance of the premodern city remains largely unknown. Through a synthesis of textual, pictorial, and archeological sources, this work attempts to shed light on Kyoto’s premodern urban landscape with the aim of opening up new ways of thinking about key aspects of premodern Japanese history.

The book begins with an examination of Kyoto’s highly idealized urban plan (adapted from Chinese models in the eighth century) and the reasons behind its eventual failure. The formation of the suburbs of Kamigyō and Shimogyō is compared to the creation of large exurban temple-palace complexes by retired emperors from the late eleventh century. Each, it is argued, was a material manifestation of the advancement of privatized power that inspired a medieval discourse aimed at excluding “outsiders.” By examining this discourse, a case is made that medieval power holders, despite growing autonomy, continued to see the emperor and classical state system as the ultimate sources of political legitimacy. This sentiment was shared by the leaders of the Ashikaga shogunate, who established their headquarters in Kyoto in 1336. The narrative examines how these warrior leaders interacted with the capital’s urban landscape, revealing a surprising degree of deference to classical building protocols and urban codes. Remaining chapters look at the dramatic changes that took place during the Age of Warring States (1467–1580s) and Kyoto’s postwar revitalization under the leadership of Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. Nobunaga’s construction of Nijō Castle in 1569 transformed Kyoto’s fundamental character and, as Japan’s first castle town, it set an example soon replicated throughout the archipelago. In closing, the book explores how Hideyoshi―like so many before him, yet with much greater zeal―used monumentalism to co-opt and leverage the authority of Kyoto’s traditional institutions.

Richly illustrated with original maps and diagrams, Kyoto is a panoramic examination of space and architecture spanning eight centuries. It narrates a history of Japan’s premodern capital relevant to the fields of institutional history, material culture, art and architectural history, religion, and urban planning. A history of Kyoto from 800-1600

Matthew Stavros traces the history of Kyoto through eight centuries of urban planning and design. He foregrounds Kyoto as the topic of the book, but far from writing a mere history of buildings, he describes the dynamic relationship between the people of Kyoto and the built environment of their city and its suburbs. Stavros acquaints the reader with the institutions of imperial ritual, the palaces of nobles, the bustling machiya of merchants, and the fortified compounds of warriors.

Stavros returns throughout the book to his main themes of monumentality and authority, public authority versus private power, and the relationship between space, place, and authority. These broad themes are balanced by details from primary sources such as diaries, which give personal accounts of demonstrations by armed warrior monks or first-hand descriptions of castle architecture.

The many maps and diagrams in this book are one of its great assets. They show how the ideal Kyoto was imagined, and how the real Kyoto failed to live up to the ideal; they show the rise and decline of marketplaces, the reconfiguration of venues of state, and the destruction of the city by warfare.

Stavros' writing style is clear and incisive. The book is very well-organized with useful summaries at the end of each chapter. I recommend this book for students of Japanese history, and while it is an academic work, I think anyone with an interest in the beautiful city of Kyoto would enjoy reading it.

I have two small suggestions. 1) A chronology of the main events in the book would be very helpful. 2) Captions to the many beautiful, color reproductions of folding screens and other illustrations should include the date of production. These are minor points and not enough to take the star rating down from 5.

An Accessible and Enthralling History of Kyoto

It's not easy to write a book on pre-modern Japan that is accessible to non-scholars but still scholarly. Matthew Stavros, however, has achieved this in spades. In fact, he's crafted an enthralling work that I found hard to put down. The compelling narrative highlights the many changes to the city from its idealized origins through the following centuries of shifting political and social structures and occasional warfare. But it also demonstrates continuities, many of which still appear in the city today. Stavros should be applauded for succeeding in writing a compact work (less than 200 pages excluding notes) that does not sacrifice nuance. It offers something for everyone: tourists traveling to Kyoto for the first time would surely enjoy it and even long-time Kyoto residents would have much to learn from it. Moreover, the many maps, reproductions of premodern images, and photographs, as well as a beautifully executed layout make the book as aesthetically pleasing as it was intellectually engaging. This is a model for academic historical writing. Highly recommended for all.

This book offers a detailed account of Kyoto and its landscape through the ages, describing the events and people which shaped the city, and Japan as a whole.
From Kyoto's origins as a Chinese-inspired 'eternal capital', Stavros shows the reader a city that despite considerable changes to its form and character never lost its place as the primary location in the narrative of Japan.
Unlike many other scholarly works, 'Kyoto' is never a burden to read. The quality of the photos and diagrams (mostly the author's own) within the book complement the rich imagery within the text.
'Kyoto' is recommended to any wishing to gain an understanding of the city and its importance in Japanese history.

A clear view of ancient ideas

I've long pondered how to bring ancient Chinese ideas to life for people who are neither ancient nor Chinese. Paul Goldin does just this in this concise and remarkably clear book. If you want to understand the context in which Chinese ideas and practices related to sex and sexual regulation and cultivation developed, don't look elsewhere first. Start with Professor Goldin's book. It is a priceless resource for all who would be such seekers.

Following His Lord Into Death

Doris Bargen's latest book, Suicidal Honor, is an investigation of General Maresuke Nogi's suicide in 1912 Japan. On 30 July of that year, the Emperor Meiji died. On September 13, General Nogi committed an outlawed form of ritual suicide, called "junshi", during the emperor's funeral procession in order to "follow his lord into death". As usual, Bargen delivers a solid work -- deeply researched, and meticulously written and edited.

Emperor Meiji's reign had spanned many changes, most notably the end of the shogunate as well as the beginning of Japan's modernization. By investigating General Nogi's suicide, Bargen intends to analyze "the cultural significance of General Nogi's expiatory act of self-sacrifice in a time of regime change". The first part of Bargen's book compares and contrasts ritual suicide in other cultures and explains the Japanese act of junshi in particular; the second part probes the life and death of General Nogi (as well as that of his wife, who committed suicide with him); and the latter sections, hoping to shed further light on Nogi's anachronistic act, analyze the topical literary works of Mori Ogai (Nogi's friend) and Natsume Soseki.

Suicidal Honor begins by investigating the seed that is Nogi's junshi. By its conclusion, the book has explored the topic from so many angles that it blooms like the chrysanthemum crests that decorate its chapters. General Nogi's junshi is a rich subject; and you will find that you are thinking not only about Nogi himself, but about so many other things as well -- Soseki's and Ogai's characters, Nogi's wife, women in Japan, the Meiji era, the differences between seppuku (or harakiri) and junshi... the list goes on. I recommend this book highly.

Samurai Seppuku and Sensei's Suicide

Get ready to tread through a minefield. Any book like this that focuses on suicide in Japan, especially samurai practices of "junshi" (following one's lord in death) is fated to grapple BOTH with American stereotypes of fanatic suicidal Japanese echoing faintly but discernibly from WWII propaganda overlapping oddly with romanticized fantasies of exotic samurai AND culturally essentialist discourses on "unique" Japanese values courtesy of somewhat creepy right-wingers in Japan itself. I don't envy Doris Bargen as she attempts to navigate this mess. Given the chance, I'm not sure I'd even try. So the fact that she mostly manages to make it through this Scylla and Charybdis with perhaps only a few minor mishaps is definitely to her credit and to the credit of this interesting interdisciplinary study.

And the book is certainly interdisciplinary, primarily a work of history and literary criticism coupled together but also incorporating insights from religious studies, anthropology, and a bit of armchair psychology, among other things. Actual samurai practices from Japan's premodern history are explored in light of cross-cultural comparisons with Ancient Rome and Pre-Columbian Mexico--specifically as these influence, inform, or otherwise shed light on General Nogi's shocking suicide following Emperor Meiji's death in 1912 and THEN the effect of this jolt on two of Japan's great novelists of the time, Mori Ogai and Natsume Soseki.

The resulting discussion is lively and interesting, written in an engagingly straightforward scholarly prose style very rare in literary studies nowadays. That said, the quality is sometimes a bit uneven. The history bit taking up the first half seems pretty solid, though the author sometimes imputes thoughts into her subjects' heads that are impossible to substantiate and kind of neither here nor there anyhow, and sometimes she uses questionable sources uncritically--for instance, information about the Nogi family's native home is gleaned from an English language tourism brochure from 1975, and the reign dates it gives for legendary or semi-legendary emperors are repeated without any warning to the unsuspecting generalist that these are mythohistorical, i.e. objectively bogus. As for the literature bit, the two chapters on Mori Ogai (who knew Nogi personally) are a bit thin on substance, consisting more of plot summary and obvious exposition than analysis (and these have been translated into English anyway in Historical Fiction of Mori Ogai (Unesco Collection of Representative Works Japanese Series)), and the conclusion that Ogai was a cultural curator for his contemporaries seems a tad meager a payoff. The final chapter on Natsume Soseki and his novel "Kokoro" is a good bit more substantial and intriguing, attempting to actually analyze what everyone else merely notes in passing, that Nogi's suicide influences the suicide of Sensei at the end of the novel. While no radical surprises jump out from this, there are quite a few clever insights to be had.

Since my interest and enthusiasm are more for Soseki than Ogai, this balance of quality worked out quite well for me, but those keener on Ogai are bound to feel a bit short-changed, I imagine. Still, there's enough in this book to make the book worthwhile for either party as well as for anyone interested in Japanese literature and history overall. Eminently readable and culling together many existing sources without extensive new archival research, this is a good book rather than a great one, a modest tome that takes a difficult subject and handles it well without a lot of hyped up groundbreaking critical interventions and the like. And there's no dishonor in that.

There is no other daily devotional as good as this one!

After 10 years of Daily Guideposts as my daily devotional, I decided to try a different daily devotional book. 4 weeks into the year and the daily readings, and it's so dry and boring that I just can't choke down another day of it. So I gave in and ordered myself the 2015 Daily Guideposts and can't wait to have my copy. In the meantime, I'm borrowing my mother's copy.

Best maps

All of the James Bier maps are the best of every island. Don't waste your money on others and don't try to find off the beaten path places with rental car maps. These maps show the locacations and name of every waterfall and the date of every lava flow. A must for those interested in the real Hawaii.

Best maps for Hawaii

The James Bier maps of the Hawaii Islands are the best reference for your travels. We've been using these maps for getting around the islands for over 20 years. The detailed geographic information and relief shading to show land details and lava flows are great. The close-up maps of developed areas and special features such as Hawaii Volcano National park cover just about everything you'll need.

The only other map we use is the book (Ready Map Book of East (or West) Hawaii) of street maps that helps us find specific streets in the various subdivisions. We only need that on rare occasions. Usually the James Bier map is enough.

A MUST if you're planning on adventuring while in hawaii!

My husband and I were planning on going to the big island and, although we had a GPS, I wanted a map that we would use to mark the places we wanted to go while we were on the plane (something to do to pass the 10 hours in the air! :) this map turned out to be a Godsend! we were on the Big Island for 8 days and wore this map out! we did a lot of touristing and this map was really helpful! Not only did it show towns, roads, etc., it also showed points of interest that came in very handy! It also showed the lava flows and gave the dates of them. If you're going to the Big Island and plan on doing some adventuring, this is a great map to get! We also got one for Oahu, which was very helpful on that island as well.

He was referring to the prevailing belief of Papua New Guineans that everything is invested with spirit, not least the objects carved, modeled, or constructed for ceremonial, and often everyday, use. The Masterpieces Exhibition includes the most significant cultural treasures on display at the Papua New Guinea’s national museum. This book gives the reader a thorough account of each of the exhibition’s 209 pieces.An introduction aims to give the general reader an idea of the significance of the objects and how they are to be understood. Other chapters provide a brief history of the museum and its role in forging national identity. Editor Barry Craig sets the individual works in their local context with historical and field photographs. The objects are dealt with under various headings: Watercraft, Architecture, Household Items, Gardening and Fertility Figures, Hunting and Warfare, Musical Instruments, Masks and Mortuary Objects.

The Masterpieces Collection In Papua New Guinea

In the preamble to the constitution of Papua New Guinea it states : "We,the people of Papua New Guinea....pay homage to the memory of our ancestors...[and]...acknowledge the worthy customs and traditional wisdoms of our people...". The Papua New Guinea National Museum and Art Gallery reflects the importance given this cultural heritage and houses 209 objects in the museum's "Masterpieces Collection," which form the basis for this book. Before independence from Australia, the Chief Minister of Papua New Guinea, Michael Somare, referred to his new country's cultural treasures as "Living Spirits With Fixed Abodes", and it is with the idea that these important artifacts are embued with living spirits that these items are housed in PNG's National Museum, and that this book is written.

Having set up the book's significance in Papua New Guinea history, art and culture, it is disappointing to note that the book merits 3.5 stars at best. Nearly all the items are shown far too small, (at a third or quarter of a page), and the color of many of the photographs seems "washed out." (This could be poor lighting, poor color separation, or possibly the natural pigments of the items have indeed faded out.) However, the biggest disappointment is that quite a few of the "masterpieces" are very ordinary when compared to the finest PNG objects in print. Nevertheless, an important book, if not as good as it should have been.

I would recommend Art in Oceania: A New History for a better book at a better price.
