Just enough words for a toddler to remember
By P Davis
I was so impressed with the Christmas version of this book, given to me as a gift, that I am now purchasing the entire collection of holiday stories (Valentines, Easter, Fourth of July, Thanksgiving). This book is just perfect for toddlers. First, its a board book style, built for many readings and little fingers...next the story is both meaningful and easily stated, just enough words for a toddler to remember. The books explain religious stories and how they are celebrated. I liked relating this with my children, who are at the age where they soak in new experiences from everything around them.

NOT The Story of Easter
By MJ Stevens
I bought this book for a small child in time for easter because the cover looks colorfully nice and it’s by Pingry. I can see that she authored 2 different versions of the same title , but this is what I have for reading since it’s a board book. I have seen the other version carrying the same title of the same author, but with different illustrations. The other book was much better in content, it’s much more detailed and more accurate in telling about easter. However, Thornburgh’s drawings and vibrant colors on this book is much more commendable, the characters are not all too cartoonish or blurred out. It’s visually attractive enough and can catch the attention of a young mind.
My problem is the content. I thought with this newer edition the author might have done better, because compared to the older version, I was surprised to see that they are really exactly the same.
The title in comparison to the content is very vague. The book is a total of 22 pages, and out of this precious limited number of pages come in 6 pages of the actual story of easter.
The 6 page story of the easter turns out as: first 2 pages – Jesus sits on a donkey and the people wave palms, next 2 pages- mild portrait of the crucifixion, next 2 pages – angel appearing to the women “Jesus has risen!”. That is all.
2 pages at the starting point tell about SPRING and babies born or so, and my small child came out bored just by listening and looking at the pictures of baby animals. Next 2 pages touch the word easter and Jesus. The pictures include children playing under the rain, beside a pond. How uninteresting. All the rest of the pages talk about Jesus being good, and oh, there’s a church and there’s a cross, kind of thing. Though related, these are not totally easter story. There are a whole of other choices out there if you’re not into the gruesome details, but this does not cover the story of easter.
If the book was meant to “bridge” the biblical story with the present generation easter celebration, and serve as an “introduction” to the easter story, then the title is far from appropriate.

This is prefect for explaining Easter to my 3 year old. Not over detailed but just enough. We have the Christmas one too and love it also.
