Childhood Memories

As a child Ideals was always on the coffee table come holiday time, so it brings back some very sweet memories. I was sorry it is no longer in business. This book (1991) is hard cover with lovely poems, stories and pictures through out. A true keepsake.

Compassion is a word we use frequently but rarely precisely. One reason we lack a philosophically precise understanding of compassion is that moral philosophers today give it virtually no attention. Indeed, in the predominant ethical traditions of the West (deontology, consequentialism, virtue ethics), compassion tends to be either passed over without remark or explicitly dismissed as irrelevant. And yet in the predominant ethical traditions of Asia, compassion is centrally important: All else revolves around it. This is clearly the case in Buddhist ethics, and compassion plays a similarly indispensable role in Confucian and Daoist ethics.

In Compassion and Moral Guidance, Steve Bein seeks to explain why compassion plays such a substantial role in the moral philosophies of East Asia and an insignificant one in those of Europe and the West. The book opens with detailed surveys of compassion’s position in the philosophical works of both traditions. The surveys culminate in an analysis of the conceptions of self and why the differences between these conceptions serve either to celebrate or marginalize the importance of compassion.

Bein moves on to develop a model for the ethics of compassion, including a chapter on applied ethics seen from the perspective of the ethics of compassion. The result is a new approach to ethics, one that addresses the Rawlsian and Kantian concern for fairness, the utilitarian concern for satisfactory consequences, and the concern in care ethics for the proper treatment of marginalized groups. Bein argues that compassion’s capacity to address all of these makes it a primary tool for ethical decision-making.

Squarely hits the mark

This book is written for an academic audience but is easily understood by a lay reader. The author writes well and without unnecessary complications.

Most explorations in this area fall to one side or the other of either being too harsh or too lenient. This treatment shows that "wise compassion", used as a philosophical excellence, best fills the need for moral guidance in our relationships without being either abusive of others or abusive of self.

I do offer the advice for non-academics to simply skip chapter 1. It is the obligatory academic exercise of examining related work and context. Chapter 2 is along the same lines, but the contexts explored are eastern philosophy rather than western and are probably less well-known. Also, the author seems to write with much more enthusiasm about how compassion fits with eastern philosophy. The very last chapter covers pratice but I found it a rather uninspired treatment although the summarized points from Sister Helen Prejean's work do contribute well.

Chapter 4: Objections to an Ethic of Compassion.
Chapter 5: Compassion in Action.

I volunteer at a local prison facilitating Alternative to Violence Project workshops and teaching Impact of Crime on Victim's Courses. I find a need for both a "soft" and a "hard" edge in helping inmates understand and reinvent themselves -- even to believe that it is possible to do so. I've read a number of books in psychology, moral and ethical philosophy, adult learning, etc. Until this book I haven't come across an idea -- Steve Bein's treatment of compassion -- that fits as snuggly in the breech between too-hard and too-soft.

These bring back a lot of memories for me, as my parents often gave them to me for the Holidays. One time my Mother put the Easter edition in my Easter basket, where unbeknownst to her, there was a story on how the Easter Bunny came about, so I asked her after I read the story. :)

Powerful labor movements played a critical role in shaping modern Hawaii, beginning in the 1930s, when International Longshore and Warehousemen’s Union (ILWU) representatives were dispatched to the islands to organize plantation and dock laborers. They were stunned by the feudal conditions they found in Hawaii, where the majority of workers―Hawaiian, Japanese, Chinese, and Filipino in origin―were routinely subjected to repression and racism at the hands of white bosses.

The wartime civil liberties crackdown brought union organizing to a halt; but as the war wound down, Hawaii workers’ frustrations boiled over, leading to an explosive success in the forming of unions. During the 1950s, just as the ILWU began a series of successful strikes and organizing drives, the union came under McCarthyite attacks and persecution. In the midst of these allegations, Hawaii’s bid for statehood was being challenged by powerful voices in Washington who claimed that admitting Hawaii to the union would be tantamount to giving the Kremlin two votes in the U.S. Senate, while Jim Crow advocates worried that Hawaii’s representatives would be enthusiastic supporters of pro–civil rights legislation.

Hawaii’s extensive social welfare system and the continuing power of unions to shape the state politically are a direct result of those troubled times. Based on exhaustive archival research in Hawaii, California, Washington, and elsewhere, Gerald Horne’s gripping story of Hawaii workers’ struggle to unionize reads like a suspense novel as it details for the first time how radicalism and racism helped shape Hawaii in the twentieth century.

Happy Birthday, Jesus! is a Christmas board book by Michelle Medlock Adams. In this rhyming story children are reminded that Christmas is the day their savior was born. The children in the book decorate, bake a cake and go out and celebrate this special day by having a birthday party in honor of Jesus. This book is a must have for parents wanting their children to understand the reason we celebrate. The rhyming text is so fun and my two young children asked me to read it again and again. We always make a birthday cake and sing for Jesus on Christmas and this book will become a part of our tradition year after year. The illustrations are so eye catching with their vivid colors that your young child will be very drawn to the story. This is a great book that makes celebrating the birth of Jesus more fun than Santa Claus!

I like the party idea

I bought two of these for my four-year old granddaughter and my almost four-year old grandson. Each year I purchase a book for them to remind them just whose birthday Christmas is. The concept of using a typical birthday party scene (complete with balloons and cake) of this book is very clever. The kids were intrigued with a party for Jesus and I hope it reminded them of the reason for the celebration. Recommended.

For over a century French officials in Indochina systematically uprooted métis children―those born of Southeast Asian mothers and white, African, or Indian fathers―from their homes. In many cases, and for a wide range of reasons―death, divorce, the end of a romance, a return to France, or because the birth was the result of rape―the father had left the child in the mother's care. Although the program succeeded in rescuing homeless children from life on the streets, for those in their mothers' care it was disastrous. Citing an 1889 French law and claiming that raising children in the Southeast Asian cultural milieu was tantamount to abandonment, colonial officials sought permanent, "protective" custody of the children, placing them in state-run orphanages or educational institutions to be transformed into "little Frenchmen."

The Uprooted offers an in-depth investigation of the colony's child-removal program: the motivations behind it, reception of it, and resistance to it. Métis children, Eurasians in particular, were seen as a threat on multiple fronts―colonial security, white French dominance, and the colonial gender order. Officials feared that abandoned métis might become paupers or prostitutes, thereby undermining white prestige. Métis were considered particularly vulnerable to the lure of anticolonialist movements―their ambiguous racial identity and outsider status, it was thought, might lead them to rebellion. Métischildren who could pass for white also played a key role in French plans to augment their own declining numbers and reproduce the French race, nation, and, after World War II, empire.

French child welfare organizations continued to work in Vietnam well beyond independence, until 1975. The story of the métis children they sought to help highlights the importance―and vulnerability―of indigenous mothers and children to the colonial project. Part of a larger historical trend, the Indochina case shows striking parallels to that of Australia's "Stolen Generation" and the Indian and First Nations boarding schools in the United States and Canada. This poignant and little known story will be of interest to scholars of French and Southeast Asian studies, colonialism, gender studies, and the historiography of the family.

Although modernization in Korea started more than a century later than in the West, it has worked as a prominent ideology throughout the past century―in particular it has brought radical changes in Korean architecture and cities. Traditional structures and ways of life have been thoroughly uprooted in modernity’s continuous negation of the past. This book presents a comprehensive overview of architectural development and urbanization in Korea within the broad framework of modernization.

Twentieth-century Korean architecture and cities form three distinctive periods. The first, defined as colonial modern, occurred between the early twentieth century and 1945, when Western civilization was transplanted to Korea via Japan, and a modern way of life, albeit distorted, began taking shape. The second is the so-called developmental dictatorship period. Between 1961 and 1988, the explosive growth of urban populations resulted in large-scale construction booms, and architects delved into modern identity through the locality of traditional architecture. The last period began in the mid-1990s and may be defined as one of modernization settlement and a transition to globalization. With city populations leveling out, urbanization and architecture came to be viewed from new perspectives.

Inha Jung, however, contends that what is more significant is the identification of elements that have remained unchanged. Jung identifies continuities that have been formed by long-standing relationships between humans and their built environment and, despite rapid modernization, are still deeply rooted in the Korean way of life. For this reason, in the twentieth century, regionalism exerted a great influence on Korean architects. Various architectural and urban principles that Koreans developed over a long period while adapting to the natural environment have provided important foundations for architects’ works. By exploring these sources, this carefully researched and amply illustrated book makes an original contribution to defining modern identity in Korea’s architecture, housing, and urbanism.

Inha Jung has written a fine volume, full of very well informed accounts of events, insightful analyses of projects, and nuanced ideas about the unique flow of architectural and urban modernization in Korea. Jung is a mature scholar who delivers a well-balanced and original account that is both ambitious in scope and delivered in unencumbered and economical prose, with lavish documentation should one want to go further into particular aspects. It is a book that can easily be read and appreciated by people outside the field, in, say, cultural or Korean studies, as well as by those without disciplinary affiliation who are simply interested in Korea. Nice book on the historical survey of modern planning strategies that shaped contemporary Seoul, Korea.

Prof. Inha Jung became a popular architecture writer in Korea in 90s~00s through his trilogy
on three key architects in Modern Korea; namely, Soogeun Kim, Joongup Kim, and Jongsung Kim.
Like Bernini and Boromini, Soogeun and Joongup were lifetime rivals.
The Korean regime leaders of 60s~80s favored Soogeun over Joongup.
Soogeun, trained in Korean & Japan, established SPACE.
Joongup, trained in Korea & France, was trained in atelier of Le Corbuiser.
Soogeun and Joongup are the first generation of Korean architects.
Jongsung represented 2nd generation of architects. Trained at IIT worked with Mies,
Jongsung returned Korea as a first America-trained and Mies-trained architect.
Prof. Jung's trilogy brought light architectural issues during 1960s~2000s.
His current publication more or less focuses on urbanism issues during same period.
This time he introduces many players who shaped modern and contemporary cities of Korea.
The book also deals with the historical development of urbanism strategies.
The book is a historical survey. It highlights planning strategies of, Japanese Era, Post Korean War
Era, Construction Boom Era, and Global Era. Most emphasis is given to Seoul and its satelite cities.
The task of this publication was executed during Prof. Jung's sabatical stay at GSD.
In that sense, the subject matter of the book is limited to Korea, but the audience of the book
is beyond the scope of Korea. Hence, Prof Jung did great job telling a local story to the global audience.
