His Tianfang danli (Ritual law of Islam) represents the most systematic and sophisticated attempt within the Han Kitab corpus to harmonize Islam with Chinese thought.
The volume begins by situating Liu Zhi in the historical development of the Chinese Muslim intellectual tradition, examining his sources and influences as well as his legacy. Delving into the contents of Liu Zhi’s work, it focuses on his use of specific Chinese terms and concepts, their origins and meanings in Chinese thought, and their correspondence to Islamic principles. An Essential Book for Chinese Islamic Studies

This book highlights a little known aspect of Islamic studies - Muslims in China. Interest in Islamic studies has been growing over the past decade but the field of Islam in China remains small. From his book, it is clear that Prof. Frankel is a specialist in that field. In his book, he offers a multidimensional study of Chinese Muslims focusing in particular on Liu Zhi, a Muslim literati from the time of the Qing dynasty. Frankel's book is appealing for all who are interested in Islam, China, or comparative religious studies. I found the book to be a great introduction to not only Chinese Muslim intellectual discourse but also Chinese intellectual discourse in general. The book should be read by not only scholars and students but by others who are searching for a knowledge about Chinese Muslim history and development.
