In Hawaii, Tourism Is Everybody's Business

Excellent book for the time it was written, but things have changed, especially with the market shift to short term residential accommodations enabled by AirBnB/VRBO and other internet facilitators. Conventional hotels are relics of the pass and couples getaways don't cut it anymore. Stand in line at Costco or Sam's and there are families, right off the plane, in front and behind you with their flatbeds loaded up with grub and drinks. Most of them stay in residential accommodations that most long term residents can't afford. Although the book briefly discusses the "proliferation" of thousands of these accommodations throughout the islands, there is no Baumol study or report available that discusses their economic impact, despite attempts by State, County and Federal politicians to ban them, even though the President of the United States prefers them during his visits. Perhaps a 2nd edition of this book might have an additional chapter or addendum that discusses this matter, since it is a hot topic in Hawaii today.

Following her ethnographic survey of Korean women (Shamans, Housewives, and Other Restless Spirits), Kendall returned to her field notes to quarry this book devoted to a single person. The aging, garrulous shaman whom Kendall calls Yongsu's Mother recounts her life and times in a flock of rehearsed, windy tales, the events now distilled and dramatized. The pattern is not exotic: denied an education by the need to help support her family; given no love by a philandering father; bearing an illegitimate child after her lover left her; pressured into a bad marriage; jailed briefly during the Korean War, etc. Even her description of her religious calling is circumspect (she refers to gods as grandfathers), and the prosaic, familiar complaints of social injustice give this a universal but impersonal air. Kendall tries for something more by acknowledging that, as observer, she has an effect on her subject. So she mixes personal with professional comments and balances her affection for Yongsu's Mother with her doubts about certain tales' truthfulness. Finally, the faithful anthropologist, hanging on the words of a lonely old woman, stands in for the shaman's absent children. The premise is not uninteresting, but nothing in the book comes alive.

Interesting study of folk culture

The story of "Yongsu's Mother" is compelling, informative, and thought-provoking at the same time. Yongsu's Mother clearly enjoys telling her stories, and has developed a flair for the dramatic (at the expense of accuracy from time to time it appears). I read this book for a class on East Asian folklore, and while I realize Yongsu's Mother is not the archetypal shaman, her experiences shed light on not only Korean shamans, but Koreans in general.
The most interesting part of the book, besides the stories, is Kendall's struggle to ascertain the accuracy of Yongsu's Mother's stories. Yongsu's Mother is presumably not deliberately lying to Kendall, but instead exhibiting a fundamental human paradox: the past, presumably done with and set in stone, is made fluid by the human mind and memory. The point is not that Yongsu's Mother's variations destroy her credibility, but rather that the variations give insight into her, and presumably her culture's, psyche.
This was a wonderful book ... don't be scared off by the title: this is not a book specifically about religion, but a biography about a woman who happens to be a shaman. 5 out of 5 stars.

Fascinating Reading Material, but not comprehensive

This is an exhiliarating account of the life of a Korean Shaman, and her interesting life in modern Korea. It is fun to read just for pleasure and it's interesting. Because it is a case study, it does not necessarily purport to be representative of all Korean Shamans, but nevertheless it teaches a lot about Korea in this century.

a good sample of life in Korea

I've lived in Korea for 3 years, and recently read this book as part of my exploration of the culture here. I consider this one of the better books I've read for this purpose.

Everyday I see these old people, and my Korean isn't good enough to have a conversation of any substance with them. I can communicate well enough to know that they have fascinating stories of another world, one I can barely imagine. And then, I can't understand any of the details!

Well, this is one of the stories they'd have to tell me.

As another reviewer pointed out, it's a biography, not an exploration of Korean shamanism; Kendall has written a good book on that topic, however.

The subject, called "Youngsu's Mother," was a young girl at the time of the war, so her memories are quite fascinating. Her perspectives of the family dynamics, jealousies among siblings, relationships between first and second wives, and between a new wife and her in-laws are quite revealing.

A Korean friend told me about her mother, whose mother secretly threw her school books to her over a fence so that the grandfather wouldn't know the girl was going to school. Youngsu's Mother tells a similar story.

In other ways as well I sense that Youngu's Mother's story is not too remarkable for women of her generation. But it's not a summary of Korean history or anything, just one woman's story. And it's a good one, thanks to the story-telling talents of Youngsu's Mother and Laurel Kendall.

About the Author
Roland Altenburger is Research Associate at the University of Zurich, Department of Chinese Studies. He received his doctoral degree in Chinese Studies from the University of Zurich in 1996. His research stays include a two-year term at Harvard University. The present book is the revised version of his postdoctoral thesis for the attainment of the venia legendi (Habilitationsschrift), accepted by the Philosophical Faculty of the University of Zurich in June, 2001. His publications focus on pre-modern and early modern Chinese literature, particularly vernacular narrative. His research interests also include literary regionalism and popular culture.

Recognizing the urgency of the problem, this book presents ideas and case studies by conservation biologists, economists, marine life policy experts, fishing industry and fisheries professionals, management specialists, and development assistance researchers. It provides a new synthesis and blueprint for action that shifts the paradigm from piecemeal and unilateral conservation to a more holistic and multilateral approach to the recovery of Pacific sea turtle populations.

I'm obviously biased, as I spent two years of my life editing and typesetting this product. Gives a good sampling of Marshallese oral literature as recorded by an anthropologist who spoke the language, together with their English translations, and copious notes that provide an invaluable overview of Marshallese culture.

Christmas in October

All good things must come to an end, right? Sad but true. And for the gals of Sweethaven, it had to happen sooner or later.

The third and final book in Courtney Walsh's Sweethaven series, A Sweethaven Christmas, released earlier this month and has me ready to trim the tree, make cookies and play endless hours of Christmas music. (It's too soon, right?)

The holidays are in full swing in Sweethaven as the families start celebrating this special time of year. With the hurt and healing of the summer still fresh in their lives, Campbell, Jane, Lila, Adele, and Meghan look to the future with promise of good things to come.

Courtney has done an amazing job creating the community of Sweethaven, and the Christmas setting of this book had me pining for a small-town Christmas celebration. If you've never had the pleasure of attending a Christmas walk or seeing a winter holiday parade, you're missing out. Both my hometown and the town where I live now have a Christmas/holiday celebration that warms my heart despite the chill in the air. The Sweethaven celebration was everything a small-town holiday event should be.

Jane's weight-loss journey in this book was particularly moving for me, although for a couple of chapters I got tired of her whining and insecurity about her weight. (Then I was reminded how tiring my own whining and insecurity about my weight are. Touche.) Her insecurities may be the most obvious of all the women, but they all deal with it in different ways. And that's what I've loved about this journey. After three books, I feel like I know these women. Shoot, I AM these women, in some way or another. Courtney has encapsulated in these women the myriad issues we women deal with. And she's given us hope that with God, good friends and gumption, we can get through, and even over, the stuff that messes up our lives.

I didn't realize how much these women meant to me (I know they're just characters in a book, but they've become my friends!) until I found myself crying, on the brink of a major sobfest, as the book drew to a close. The only reason I didn't have a complete breakdown is that my husband was sitting on the couch across the room, and I didn't want him to think something was wrong with me. (Confession: Something IS wrong with me.)

The road these women have traveled was long, and I'm glad to have been a companion on the journey. The end of Sweethaven is bittersweet, and I imagine as an author, that takes on a new meaning. Personally, I can't wait to see what Courtney has cooking next.

I am in Awe of Courtney, she has knocked it out of the park again, this third book is a Home run!
Well readers here we are again in Sweethaven. If you all only knew how bad I wish I could go to Sweethaven. "Sweethaven is a slice of Americana---- The kind of quaint town we all romanticize".There are not words to let you all know just how talented a writer Courtney is. YOU MUST read one of her books, I know you will be hooked after just one. I truly felt after reading all three of the Sweethaven books like all of the characters are my friends and part of my family. Courtney writes with so much passion and feeling, it just runs off the page as you are reading! You know when a book is a 5 star book, it is a book that you can read over and over again, that is A Sweethaven Christmas.

Another good P K Hallinan book

Like all P K Hallinan books, this is another good book. I don't think it is quite as well written as the My Mommy and I book, but it is still a good book with a good story that takes you on a journey of a dad who clearly loves his kids. It is a great ready for my son and his daddy.
