Politics of Ritual and Remembrance: Laos Since 1975 (Studies in Contemporary Economics), by Grant Evans

Communist revolutions in this century have suppressed existing ritual and symbolic structures and invented new ones. Armed with new flags, new national celebrations, or new school textbooks, they have attempted to reconstruct social memory. This fascinating work of political anthropology examines the case of Laos from the heady days of the 1975 revolution to the more sober "post-socialist" present. Grant Evans traces the attempt at ritual and symbolic change in Laos, and the recent reemergence of older and deeper cultural structures, while identifying what has perhaps been irretrievably lost. In this challenging study of the cultural consequences of failed total revolution, Evans reaches some striking conclusions concerning the nature of social memory, cultural possibilities foregone, and the need for cultural continuity.

Excellent, far more insightful than the title suggests
By Robert H. Wilson
I have to admit I had noticed this book in the book stores long before I ever bought it. I was looking for something that would bring Lao politics and cultural insights together (by "Lao" I mean all the people of Laos,) and this appeared to be a rather dry account of current Lao politics. How wrong I was. The book turned out to be exactly what I was looking for. It brings together insights about Lao culture and the thinking of Lao people from the whole spectrum of Lao society, Lao politics both before and after the revolution, and gives enormous insights into how the cultural and political landscape of Laos have influenced each other. For a book that claims to be about the politics of Laos, very deep cultural insights are given, yet remain relevant to the subject of the book as Mr. Evans illustrates how the revolution influenced the culture of Laos and (far more often) how Lao culture shaped the course of the Lao People's Democratic Republic in the past decade-and-a-half. Furthermore, he gives us a certain amount of insight into the royal Lao government.
The book does not contain the same wit and human interest as "Stalking the Elephant Kings," but there was never any suggestion that it would. Despite having fewer personal anecdotes (not that it didn't have a fair number,) I found this book even more insightful.
The book answered a number of questions I had always had about Laos that several other books, and three weeks in the country, could not answer. I recommend it to anyone interested in this mysterious country, even casual tourists or business people investing in Laos.

Good Taste and Less Filling
By H. Campbell
Mr. Evans' slight volume focuses narrowly on the extent of the Lao Communist party's efforts to transition from dogmatic socialist to quasi-dogmatic proto-capitalist state. He argues somewhat persuasively that the pre-revolution royal-Buddhist diad never left the public's consciousness and has been supplanted by rituals that bespeak of these roots, albeit in the absence of a functioning monarchy. He states that the influence of Thailand, and particularly the Thai royal family, has to a large extent made the ruling LPDR's social dictates irrelevant; Thailand is their larger, older, more experienced Buddhist brother and will lead the recalcitrant commies to the promised land, dogma or no, but in typically understated Asian fashion.

I would liked to have seen more attention paid to the efforts of the LPDR to transform Lao society, as Mr. Evans wrote of in his Lao Peasants Under Socialism, but admittedtly that was only peripheral (and ancient history) to the theme of this book.

Real Japan, Real Fear, Really Good
By J. Holt
Kyoka's tales define Japanese Gothic: masterpieces of Japanese Ghost Stories
and, at the same time, short stories about love which exceeds death's
boundries. "The Surgery Room" is a vivid tale of a surgeon torn between
saving his patient's life or letting her die with her secrets. In "Osen and
Sokichi" a boy finds salvation in a prostitute only to learn later the
terrible price of sacrifice. "One Day in Spring" chronicles the passion
between two loves: one which transcends time and threatens to literally trap
others in the flowing lines of their poetry. Finally, in "The Holy Man of
Mt. Koya"--the best story--we learn of a mountain seductress who tempts a
monk to forsake his vows and, possibly, his humanity. Unlike Banana
Yoshimoto and other modern writers who can only write about their boredom
with life, Kyoka gives us a compelling description of the Japanese and their culture: what
they love to fear.

Hauntingly Good English Debut for Izumi Kyoka
By Crazy Fox
The four stories by Izumi Kyoka (one of Japan's most interesting and eccentric modern authors) included in this book are truly excellent, haunting in almost every sense of the word: Creepy and spooky, reverberating with untold depths, recurring obsessively in imagery, and hard to forget. For all intents and purposes this is the first book-length translation of Kyoka's fiction into English, and so it's appropriate that the four stories sort of capture the span of Kyoka's artistic development in microcosm: "The Surgery Room" is an early work by Kyoka that somewhat resembles the naturalist fiction of the time, concerned with serious social issues and the sordid side of life--many of Kyoka's perennial themes are here in embryo within this melodramatic tale, but it is clear that he hasn't quite found his footing yet. "The Holy Man of Mount Koya" is his most famous work and justly so, and here we see Kyoka's themes spelled out with the most narrative clarity ever--he hit the nail right on the head with this archetypal story of temptation and transcendence. "One Day in Spring" develops these themes in similar ways to the prior story, but Kyoka gets very surreal and imagistic in his writing style here--imagine a traditional Japanese ghost story, a haunting no drama, and an episode of "The Twilight Zone" blended together with a dash of Salvador Dali and you might get something like this complex story. And this weird writing style also informs "Osen and Sokichi" which otherwise in basic premise is similar to the first story.

Charles Inouye's introduction and conclusion are extremely helpful in placing Izumi Kyoka in context and in interpreting the stories in an illuminating but not high-handed manner. And his talent and craftsmanship as a translator are incredible. One could ask for no better introduction of Izumi Kyoka to the English-speaking world than this little volume.

Unfortunate women and death
By Zack Davisson
"Japanese Gothic Tales" might be a slightly misleading title for this collection of four of Izumi Kyoka's short stories. While they are gothic in the sense of being somewhat in the style of gothic literature, they are not really gothic in the modern sense of the word. In other words, this is not a straight forward collection of horror stories. Kyoka may very well be Japan's Edgar Allen Poe, as has been maintained before, but if so it is because of his effective use of atmosphere and the short story, rather than his themes.
Instead of horror, it is a sampling of Kyoka's unique and somewhat complicated style of storytelling. His use of layers and misdirection, of drifting back and forth in time and story without offering life-lines to the readers creates an atmosphere of disquiet far more than any ghosts of monsters. Kyoka is particularly difficult to read even for native Japanese speakers, and he is incredibly difficult to translate.
"The Surgery Room" offers a traditional Japanese tale of impossible love and the consequences it leads to. More than anything, it reminds me of one of Road Dahl's adult short stories. Sharp and cutting like a scalpel.
"The Holy Man of Mt. Koya" is probably the most straight forward tale, and rates the cover of the book. A mountain ghost story that is both chilling and thought-provoking. Excellent.
"One Day in Spring" is a complicated tangle, drifting back and forth between characters, stories and life-times. It revisits the familiar thread of love outside your caste, and the only possible solution. A very sad story, with subtle Buddhist undertones. It is the longest story in the book.
"Osen and Soichi" is a tale of maternal infatuation that is often found in Japanese literature. The character of the prostitute/surrogate mother who suffers for her charge. Of course, there can be no happy ending.
The translator, Charles Inouye, has done a superb job rendering Kyoka into English, as well as providing informative Forwards and Afterwords, discussing the tales and Kyoka's place in Japanese literature.

Remembering the Kanji 3: Writing and Reading the Japanese Characters for Upper-Level Proficiency, by James W. Heisig

Students who have learned to read and write the kanji taught in Japanese schools run into the same difficulty that Japan university students themselves face: the number of characters included in the approved list is not sufficient for advanced reading and writing. Although each academic specialization requires supplementary kanji of its own, there is considerable overlap. With that in mind, this book employs the same methods as Volumes 1 and 2 of Remembering the Kanji to introduce additional characters useful for upper-level proficiency, bringing the total of all three volumes to 3,000 kanji.

The 3rd edition has been updated to reflect the 196 new kanji approved by the government in 2010, all of which have been relocated in Volume 1. The selection of 800 new kanji is based on frequency lists and cross-checked against a number of standard Japanese kanji dictionaries.

Separate parts of the book are devoted to learning the writing and reading of these characters. The writing requires only a handful of new “primitive elements.” A few are introduced as compound primitives (“measure words”) or as alternative forms for standard kanji. The majority of the kanji are organized according to the elements introduced in Volume 1.

As in Volume 2, Chinese readings are arranged into groups for easy reference, enabling the student to take advantage of the readings assigned to “signal primitives” already learned.

Seven indexes include hand-drawn samples of the new characters introduced and cumulative lists of the key word and primitive meaning, and of the Chinese and Japanese pronunciations, that appear in all 3 volumes of the series.

Spoiler Alert - RTK ends in tears
By Amazon Customer
This book is the result of carrying a deeply flawed system to its logical conclusion. I have spent a huge amount of time with the RTK series and am going to vent my frustration here.

BASIC PROBLEMS WITH THE RTK SYSTEM AS A WHOLE
Before I comment on the failings that are specific to the third volume, I will comment on the failings of RTK3 that represent weaknesses of the RTK series as a whole. What this book shows very clearly, and what you don’t realize when you get hooked in by the opening chapters of the first volume, is that the whole system sacrifices all other goals to the ill-advised objective of rotely memorizing how to write all the kanji by heart, at the expense of far more important matters such as understanding the actual correct meanings of the kanji (instead of arbitrary English keywords) and learning kanji through real Japanese vocabulary that would allow you to see how the kanji are actually used and how words are constructed from them. This series would only make sense if your only purpose were to memorize how to write 3000 characters for the purpose of some game show or contest, and had no intention to actually use the Japanese language.

An equally big problem is that the series uses arbitrary English labels for some kanji elements (“primitives”), labels that work nicely for a few kanji at the beginning (for which the author provides beautiful — even poetic — mnemonic stories) but then don’t work well at all for many other kanji later on (for which the author revealingly provides no mnemonics at all), so that the series ends up making it HARDER to remember kanji meanings, not easier. The method does have special strengths for the purpose of remembering how to WRITE kanji, but this is far less important than remembering the MEANINGS of the kanji, and that these meanings be CORRECT. The fact is that RTK’s system of primitives, while it can be used in fanciful stories for remembering how to write characters, usually does not work very well for understanding and remembering the characters’ meanings. It is no wonder that the series provides mnemonics only for the limited number of kanji for which the system works, and leaves all the others BLANK (and in characteristically glib fashion, presents this as a FEATURE!).

For example, how does it help me to spend time trying to memorize that a kanji means “a” as in “a certain” by virtue of containing the primitives ‘mouth’, ‘floor’ and ‘fiesta’? Similarly, even though it is easy to remember the kanji for “leek” just by seeing it a few times in the context of a REAL JAPANESE SENTENCE, RTK asks you to learn it in a totally roundabout way isolated from any meaningful context: first you have to memorize by a component primitive called “green onion”, and then somehow you have to remember that the combination of “green onion” + “jail cell” + “floor” means “leek”. Truly I cannot think of a harder way to learn kanji than this!

Another example is that the “dog” radical is labeled instead as “pack of wild dogs”. This is useful within the RTK system, which cannot have two primitives with the same label. But it is the opposite of useful for the purpose of properly learning and remembering the meanings of all the kanji that contain this primitive.

What becomes especially clear in RTK 3 is that is that the series’ strategy of having you learn kanji in isolation from words is a horrible idea, particularly at higher levels where you’re only likely to see a given kanji in a few words, or even one word. For example, the characters in 琵琶 biwa (lute) are rarely if ever seen except in this word, so there is no logical reason why one should bother to learn these two kanji separately. Yet this book asks you to do just that, by memorizing arbitrary English labels for the primitives in order to memorize other arbitrary English labels for the characters, which themselves are merely component parts of the word 琵琶 and practically never appear elsewhere. Why not just learn the word 琵琶 biwa?! What a total waste of time. Oh wait, I forgot, I need to use the RTK system because otherwise I won’t be able to write the word for “lute” from memory, in a pinch, without having to pull out my smartphone.

Similarly, the book forces you to dedicate special time to learning the kanji 噌 SO of 味噌 MISO independently from the word, when it is never used independently of that word. Just learn the word MISO for Pete’s sake! And to top it off the book “teaches” you the kanji 噌 without even showing you the word MISO. This is what I mean when I say the book has lost all contact with reality.

The series takes so much pride in being “unconventional”, but this is more like “delusional”. The series lives in its own imaginary world where the goal is to “remember” each kanji and the actual Japanese language is immaterial. But even WITHIN its make-believe world of isolated individual kanji the book is wrong, since that kanji by itself does NOT mean “miso”, as the book would have you believe, but merely designates the sound “so”. Only the two kanji 味噌 TOGETHER mean “miso”. So you're not just wasting your time; you're actively impeding your ability to properly learn the language.

A BAD APPROACH FOR LEARNING ADVANCED KANJI
RTK1 has 2136 kanji. For learning more than that, it does not make sense to follow some arbitrary prescribed list, but to learn the kanji you need for functioning in your fields of interest. There is a reason the Japanese Ministry of Education does not prescribe more than 2136 kanji, which is that trying to fill the gap between there and 3000 would just produce an arbitrary selection of rarely used kanji that did not fit any one person’s needs, so people should be free to go their own way from here. But RTK takes a more authoritarian approach, prescribing a centralized list for everyone, apparently for the purpose of selling more books. Because its list is so eclectic and arbitrary, the list is useful to no one, except within RTK's warped reality in which we don’t care about the actual Japanese language.

Far better to learn the characters you need as you need them. You won't be any worse off, because this book doesn't provide any real instruction about the kanji it does include, and doesn't organize them into groups of any special usefulness.

Also, you should not be rotely learning kanji in isolation at this advanced level. The fact that RTK would use such a strategy just shows how out of touch it is with the real language as native speakers use it.

Another problem is that this book teaches you traditional forms as if you should be learning these as separate characters. The RTK series is forced into this wrong-headed strategy by virtue of its emphasis on using mnemonic stories to learn to WRITE kanji by heart. For this reason, it must treat traditional forms as separate characters. But they are NOT separate characters, and you should not wait to see them until after you have learned all the other characters. Instead you should become aware of them when you learn the kanji the first time around, so that you will be familiar with the relationship between the traditional and simplified characters.

POOR INTEGRATION WITH RTK1 AND RTK2
The introduction to RTK3 well describes much of the arbitrariness in the process of selecting the characters and readings, and the ways in which it is difficult to make this book and its set of characters work with the existing RTK1 and RTK2 books. Indeed in the third volume the whole tenuous RTK system falls apart, to an even greater extent than it already has by the end of both RTK1 and RTK2.

For one thing, the semantic structure RTK1 builds up from the primitives fails when the RTK3 kanji are added into the mix. For example, the kanji 此 (ko[re]) is added here, but had not been incorporated in RTK1 as such. Same goes with the left side of the character for separate, 離, or the right side of “neighbor”, 隣, when RTK adds these as independent kanji. These kanji could have been learned the right way when they were presented as primitives before, but this does not occur. So with respect to these primitives and others, RTK1 and RTK3 can each hold up within themselves, but not together. This illustrates how RTK3 was just clipped onto the earlier books, instead of the whole series being systematically organized to take all 3000 kanji into account.

Similarly, the reading groups of RTK2 also fall apart here, which only goes to show that the whole project was not thought through holistically. As the book puts it, ”Strictly speaking, the addition of secondary and tertiary readings would do away with most of my pure groups”. Here the book is being very kind with itself, because often the “secondary” readings are arguably as important as the “primary” readings. The phrase “strictly speaking” is a typical example of the glib way in which the RTK series tries to downplay its weaknesses and make sensible criticism sound like nit-picking.

The description of the yomikata ”groups" at the beginning of chapter 10 makes clear how the whole system for trying to learn the readings is excessively cumbersome and tenuous. The fact is, the whole approach is flawed from the beginning — these readings should not be learned in this fashion to begin with, but it's too late by the time you reach this book because you've already committed yourself to an approach which ultimately is not effective.

This all goes to show that the RTK series was not organized systematically, but was accumulated piecemeal, without “backward compatibility”. I was led to believe that these three books fit together into a coherent system. Isn’t that the point of having a series?  Now I buy the third book and find out that what I learned in the previous books no longer applies. This book is basically two steps forward and ten steps back.

CONCLUSION
This book attempts to extend the RTK method up to 3000 kanji, but in the process just ends up further clarifying the inherent weaknesses of the RTK system. Moreover, the book has you study hundreds of kanji you likely will never need, learn them in groups that are generally too small to be of any use, learn them often without sample words or proper meanings, and learn their readings based on “signal primitives” that are much less useful than the book would have you believe. It would have been better to work on improving Vol. 1 than to scrape together a Vol. 3.

great book

This is a wonderful version of The Night Before Christmas. Contrary to the other review, I was SO GLAD he is smoking a pipe in the book - this is a classic poem and I don't like the versions that take out the verse about the pipe to be politically correct. The ilustration is wonderful and I would recommend this book to anyone.

Love this book!

This is the older version of The Night Before Christmas. It has the neat pictures in it that I remember when I was small and I am nearly 70 years old. It will be good to read to my great grandchildren.

Illustrations 5, Censorship -5
By 4Nbahu
This is for the version illustrated by Elena Almazova and Vitaly Shvarov

When I saw this book for free today I was so excited. When I saw the quality of Illustrations I squealed. This is one of my favorite Christmas Stories, and my High School Choir would sing it. Then I realized that it had been cut.

Stabbed by the censorship police. I do not proscribe to the thought that ideas that are no longer acceptable or are becoming unacceptable should be ripped from the bookshelves. If I did, I wouldn't own any Mark Twain, or some Agatha Christie. The authors of their times wrote with the ethos of their time, whether it has changed or not does not matter. They took their inspiration and put it to pen. We should respect that and their talent. A Santa Claus with a pipe will not cause millions of children to run out and take up the bowl.

So while I praise the artistry which I found amazing. In fact a couple of the pictures I thought I could just walk into. I cannot approve of censorship in any form.

The Other Women's Lib: Gender and Body in Japanese Women's Fiction, by Julia C. Bullock

The Other Women’s Lib provides the first systematic analysis of Japanese literary feminist discourse of the 1960s―a full decade before the "women’s lib" movement emerged in Japan. It highlights the work of three well-known female fiction writers of this generation (Kono Taeko, Takahashi Takako, and Kurahashi Yumiko) for their avant-garde literary challenges to dominant models of femininity. Focusing on four tropes persistently employed by these writers to protest oppressive gender stereotypes―the disciplinary masculine gaze, feminist misogyny, "odd bodies," and female homoeroticism―Julia Bullock brings to the fore their previously unrecognized theoretical contributions to second-wave radical feminist discourse.

In all of these narrative strategies, the female body is viewed as both the object and instrument of engendering. Severing the discursive connection between bodily sex and gender is thus a primary objective of the narratives and a necessary first step toward a less restrictive vision of female subjectivity in modern Japan. The Other Women’s Lib further demonstrates that this "gender trouble" was historically embedded in the socioeconomic circumstances of the high-growth economy of the 1960s, when prosperity was underwritten by an increasingly conservative gendered division of labor that sought to confine women within feminine roles. Raised during the war to be "good wives and wise mothers" yet young enough to take advantage of the opportunities presented to them by Occupation-era reforms, the authors who fueled the 1960s boom in women’s literary publication staunchly resisted normative constructions of gender, crafting narratives that exposed or subverted hegemonic discourses of femininity that relegated women to the negative pole of a binary opposition to men. Their fictional heroines are unapologetically bad wives and even worse mothers; they are often wanton, excessive, or selfish and brazenly cynical with regard to traditional love, marriage, and motherhood.

The Other Women’s Lib affords a cogent and incisive analysis of these texts as feminist philosophy in fictional form, arguing persuasively for the inclusion of such literary feminist discourse in the broader history of Japanese feminist theoretical development. It will be accessible to undergraduate audiences and deeply stimulating to scholars and others interested in gender and culture in postwar Japan, Japanese women writers, or Japanese feminism.

Holy Ghosts: The Christian Century in Modern Japanese Fiction, by Rebecca Suter

Christians are a tiny minority in Japan, less than one percent of the total population. Yet Christianity is ubiquitous in Japanese popular culture. From the giant mutant “angels” of the Neon Genesis Evangelion franchise to the Jesus-themed cocktails enjoyed by customers in Tokyo’s Christon café, Japanese popular culture appropriates Christianity in both humorous and unsettling ways. By treating the Western religion as an exotic cultural practice, Japanese demonstrate the reversibility of cultural stereotypes and force us to reconsider common views of global cultural flows and East-West relations.

Of particular interest is the repeated reappearance in modern fiction of the so-called “Christian century” of Japan (1549–1638), the period between the arrival of the Jesuit missionaries and the last Christian revolt before the final ban on the foreign religion. Literary authors as different as Akutagawa Ryūnosuke, Endō Shūsaku, Yamada Fūtarō, and Takemoto Novala, as well as film directors, manga and anime authors, and videogame producers have all expressed their fascination with the lives and works of Catholic missionaries and Japanese converts and produced imaginative reinterpretations of the period. In Holy Ghosts, Rebecca Suter explores the reasons behind the popularity of the Christian century in modern Japanese fiction and reflects on the role of cross-cultural representations in Japan. Since the opening of the ports in the Meiji period, Japan’s relationship with Euro-American culture has oscillated between a drive towards Westernization and an antithetical urge to “return to Asia.” Exploring the twentieth-century’s fascination with the Christian Century enables Suter to reflect on modern Japan’s complex combination of Orientalism, self-Orientalism, and Occidentalism.

By looking back at a time when the Japanese interacted with Europeans in ways that were both similar to and different from modern dealings, fictional representations of the Christian century offer an opportunity to reflect critically not only on cross-cultural negotiation but also more broadly on both Japanese and Western social and political formations. The ghosts of the Christian century that haunt modern Japanese fiction thus prompt us to rethink conventional notions of East-West exchanges, mutual representations, and power relations, complicating our understanding of global modernity.

Review
Rebecca Suter combines a sweeping yet critically rigorous imagination with thorough and painstaking research to produce a wide ranging and fascinating book. Christianity in Japan is a challenging and exciting topic and Suter ably explores the varied approaches that Japanese culture has taken towards it, from ‘pure literature’ to manga. Her chapter on the Christian works of the great modernist writer Akutagawa is by itself an impressive contribution to the field of Japanese literary studies. But her work on Christianity in Japanese popular culture is even more provocative. Ranging from the spiritual to the technological to queer theory, she provides us with an exploration of the dynamic between the Christian religion and Japanese culture that is both broad and deep and always dazzling in the intellectual force of its arguments. (Susan Napier, Tufts University)|In the wake of ‘Cool Japan,’ an increasing number of instant Japanologists have started talking about interactions between Orientalists and counter-Orientalists. But without an understanding of Japan’s historical involvement with Christianity since the sixteenth century, comparisons between East and West make little sense. Holy Ghosts is a highly creative and brilliantly erudite intervention in this cross-cultural controversy. Now that compilation of the Showa Emperor’s annals has revealed his deep respect for the Vatican as the ultimate mediator in World War II, anyone who wants to discuss the cultural history of postwar Japan will find it impossible to avoid starting with Rebecca Suter’s bravely constructed reconsideration of the Christian century. (Takayuki Tatsumi, Keio University)|Rebecca Suter’s creative new book engages concretely with existing scholarship but also extends the discussion of Japan’s Christian literature into bold new territory. Drawing on a wide range of critical work and a compelling array of literary texts―from canonical fiction to popular visual culture―Suter constructs a nuanced argument with an elegance and clarity that make the book a pleasure to read. (Christopher Bolton, Williams College)

Na Kua Aina: Living Hawaiian Culture, by Davianna Pomaika'i McGregor

The word kua'aina translates literally as back land or back country. Davianna McGregor grew up hearing it as a reference to an awkward or unsophisticated person from the country. However, in the context of the Native Hawaiian cultural renaissance of the late twentieth century, kua'aina came to refer to those who actively lived Hawaiian culture and kept the spirit of the land alive. The mo'olelo (oral traditions) recounted in this book reveal how kua'aina have enabled Native Hawaiians to endure as a unique and dignified people after more than a century of American subjugation and control. The stories are set in rural communities or cultural kipuka - oases from which traditional Native Hawaiian culture can be regenerated and revitalized.

"A bold intervention in modern Hawaiian politics, a summoning to the barricades that by its end will have you cheering. Na Kua'aina is the inspiring story of a culture that refuses to die, of a resurgent nation poised to reclaim its embattled heritage. ... This is no dry-as-dust tome destined for library basements, but a solidly grounded set of political demands cast in historical mode. It is good research leading to intellectually honest conclusions with real-world applications."

Swords, Oaths, and Prophetic Visions: Authoring Warrior Rule in Medieval Japan, by Elizabeth Oyler

"Swords, Oaths, and Prophetic Visions" investigates some of the most historically important political and social issues raised by the Genpei War (1180-1185). This epic civil conflict, which ushered in Japan's age of the warriors, is most famously articulated in the monumental narrative "Heike monogatari" ("The Tale of the Heike"). Elizabeth Oyler's ambitious work lays out the complex interconnections between the numerous variant texts of the Heike and the historical events they describe. But, Oyler's innovative methodology also brings other texts and genres - the Gikeiki, the Soga monogatari, the Azuma kagami, and pieces from the kowakamai (ballad-dramas) repertoire - into her analysis. Rather than concentrating on individual texts, Oyler focuses on the intertextual relationships within this larger body of narrative and drama and the collective role of these works in creating and disseminating stories about some of the Genpei War's most contentious events. In so doing, she works toward a new understanding of the underlying cultural problems of which these tales are symptomatic and which they attempt to address.

"This is an impressive book.... Oyler probes into areas of Japan's medieval age of warrior dominance not explored by other scholars of the age. Domination and Resistance: The United States and the Marshall Islands during the Cold War, by Martha Smith-Norris

Domination and Resistance illuminates the twin themes of superpower domination and indigenous resistance in the central Pacific during the Cold War, with a compelling historical examination of the relationship between the United States and the Republic of the Marshall Islands. For decision makers in Washington, the Marshall Islands represented a strategic prize seized from Japan near the end of World War II. In the postwar period, under the auspices of a United Nations Trusteeship Agreement, the United States reinforced its control of the Marshall Islands and kept the Soviet Union and other Cold War rivals out of this Pacific region. The United States also used the opportunity to test a vast array of powerful nuclear bombs and missiles in the Marshalls, even as it conducted research on the effects of human exposure to radioactive fallout.

Although these military tests and human experiments reinforced the US strategy of deterrence, they also led to the displacement of several atoll communities, serious health implications for the Marshallese, and widespread ecological degradation. Confronted with these troubling conditions, the Marshall Islanders utilized a variety of political and legal tactics―petitions, lawsuits, demonstrations, and negotiations―to draw American and global attention to their plight. In response to these indigenous acts of resistance, the United States strengthened its strategic interests in the Marshalls but made some concessions to the islanders. Under the Compact of Free Association (COFA) and related agreements, the Americans tightened control over the Kwajalein Missile Range while granting the Marshallese greater political autonomy, additional financial assistance, and a mechanism to settle nuclear claims.

Martha Smith-Norris argues that despite COFA's implementation in 1986 and Washington's pivot toward the Asia-Pacific region in the post–Cold War era, the United States has yet to provide adequate compensation to the Republic of the Marshall Islands for the extensive health and environmental damages caused by the US testing programs.

Norris's Conclusions Appear Preconceived.
By BDMJ
So far, I've only read the intro and chapters one and two. It is difficult to read.

I have several frustrations with the book:
1. The author switches back and forth between the anthropology school and the realism school, based on whichever one better supports her argument at that point in the book.
2. The author makes wild accusations and assumptions about US goals and interests during the Cold War to support an underlying implication that has US evil intentions 100% of the time.
3. The author confuses radiation monitoring with using humans as medical experiment guinea pigs. The accusation is as historically inaccurate as it is irresponsible.
4. The author starts with a point that we can all agree on: what happened to the Bikinians was terrible. She ignores the fact that the degree to which it was and is terrible was completely unexpected. She then lists legal cases, several of which were heard or considered by the US Supreme Court. She's clearly not a lawyer and supports the Bikinians every time without examining the cases from a legal perspective. The fact that the Bikinians sue and re-sue for the same reason every time, despite having already won previous cases and received compensation several times is lost on her.
5. She ignores the fact that it takes two to tango. The Bikinians *demanded* to return to their island. She blames the US Government for pussyfooting their return, then she blames the US government for not supporting them enough after they returned, then she blames the US government for returning them to a radiation-contaminated island.
