Jill works as a nurse anesthetist and lives in North Carolina with her husband and three children, and their golden retriever.

About the illustrator: Michelle Henninger discovered her artistic talents at a very early age and put these to use with clients such as the SCBWI Bulletin, New Moon Girls magazine, and Stories for Children magazine. She lives in Colorado with her husband and two children, and a dog named Lucy.

The "touch-and-feel" parts aren't too interesting...I'm not sure this should really be called a touch-and-feel book, but the words are absolutely precious!

I bought this for my grandson's first Easter. He is only 4 months old, but I think one is never too young to hear and experience the Easter story. It is a great book to use with Mom or Dad, but not the kind to leave around the house for baby to tear up.

It's hard to find a touch and feel Easter book!

I looked a long time to find an Easter book appropriate for our highly active 2 year old grandson! Since he is a very tactile little guy, this touch and feel book was at least something that he enjoyed, though the rather abstract connection to the Biblical event did not contribute to its significance to him as relating to "going to church to learn about Jesus." It is more probably more appropriate for an older child.

Can food be both national and global at the same time? What happens when a food with a national identity travels beyond the boundaries of a nation? What makes a food authentically national and yet American or broader global?

With these questions in mind, Sonia Ryang explores the world of Korean food in four American locations, Iowa City, Baltimore, Los Angeles, and Hawaii (Kona and Honolulu). Ryang visits restaurants and grocery stores in each location and observes Korean food as it is prepared and served to customers. She analyzes the history and evolution of each dish, how it arrived and what it became, but above all, she tastes and experiences her food―four items to be specific―naengmyeon cold noodle soup; jeon pancakes; galbi barbecued beef; and bibimbap, rice with mixed vegetable.

In her ethnographic journey, Ryang discovers how the chewy noodles from Pyongyang continue to retain their texture and yet are served differently in different locales. Jeon pancakes become completely decontextualized in the United States and metamorphosed into a portable and packable carry-out food. American consumers are unaware of the pancake's sacred origin. In Hawaii, Ryang finds that it is the Vietnamese restaurant that serves unexpectedly delicious galbi barbecued meat. Intertwined in the complex colonial and postcolonial contexts, Korean galbi and Japanese yakiniku can be found side by side on the streets of Honolulu frequented by both the locals and tourists.

In writing Eating Korean in America: Gastronomic Ethnography of Authenticity, Sonia Ryang is as much an eater as a researcher. Her accounts of the cities and their distinctive take on Korean food are at once entertaining and insightful, yet deeply moving. Ryang challenges the reader to stop and think about the food we eat every day in close connection to colonial histories, ethnic displacements, and global capitalism.

Yet for centuries, Shin Buddhists met on secluded mountains, in homes, and in the backrooms of stores to teach their hidden doctrines and hold clandestine rites. Among their adherents was D. T. Suzuki’s mother, who took her son to covert Shin meetings when he was a boy.

Even among Shin experts, covert followers were relatively unknown; historians who studied them claimed they had disappeared more than a century ago. A serendipitous encounter, however, led to author Clark Chilson’s introduction to the leader of a covert Shin Buddhist group―one of several that to this day conceal the very existence of their beliefs and practices. In Secrecy’s Power Chilson explains how and why they have remained hidden.

Drawing on historical and ethnographic sources, as well as fieldwork among covert Shin Buddhists in central Japan, Secrecy’s Power introduces the histories, doctrines, and practices of different covert Shin Buddhists. It shows how, despite assumptions to the contrary, secrecy has been a significant part of Shin’s history since the thirteenth century, when Shinran disowned his eldest son for claiming secret knowledge. The work also demonstrates how secrecy in Shin has long been both a source of conflict and a response to it. Some covert Shin Buddhists were persecuted because of their secrecy, while others used it to protect themselves from persecution under rulers hostile to Shin.

Secrecy’s Power is a groundbreaking work that makes an important contribution to our knowledge on secrecy and Shin Buddhism. Organized around the various consequences concealment has had for covert Shin Buddhists, it provides new insights into the power of secrecy to produce multiple effects―even polar opposite ones. secrecy can be unhealthy

Informative and well researched.This study offers insight into any sect or group that cherishes secrets that can not only offer a kind of protection from unwanted eyes and a "structure" for belief, but conversely can become a trap, a self-sealing strategy that fears possible exposure to disconfirming information. Secrets can make insiders feel special and that in itself can become an elitist position that may have no grounds for belief. Chilson does not avoid evidence that persecution may have driven some Pure Land Buddhist sects to secrecy in pre-modern times, but it appears that secrecy now serves a different, often uhealthy purpose when persecution is practically nil.

A Great Reference

One of the difficulties that an English speaker might have in approaching Japanese philosophy is not really knowing where to start and who to work on. As one can see from the table of contents, Japanese philosophy is broad. There are communitarian thinkers like Watsuji Tetsuro, and there are individualist liberals like Fukuzawa Yukichi. There are the Zen Buddhist thinkers like Dogen and Shinran, and severe critics of Zen like Ichikawa Hakugen (who was in himself an incredible Zen man). There are both nationalists and people who got thrown in jail for their views against Japan. Oh and there are female thinkers too. So clearly, Japan outside travel guides is a complex place, difficult to reduce to stereotypes about nothingness, no-self, community, and nihonjinron (Japanese ethnocentrism).

But where does one start? Even if one can read Japanese, a non-native speaker would have a hard time just randomly going through dozens of thinkers trying to find who one finds really worth studying. And that is where I think this book is excellent. If you come across a name in a book or in a lecture, in minutes you can have a grasp of the basic approach of that person and his/her historical context. This book covers almost anyone of note in the history of thought. Spare half an hour and you can read a few selections from key works, translated in excellent and readable English. If you are convinced this person is worth reading, then you can head off to primary sources--likely in Japanese as many of the people taken up in the sourcebook have never been translated to English before.

The Japanese language is difficult, so is the philosophy, and put those two elements together and you have a very forbidding field in Japanese Philosophy. But it is the publication of books like these that make it possible both to research and to teach this subject in English.

For anyone really wanting to read primary source material from Japanese philosophy, there is nothing better in the English language. Not a book for the timid or the dilatant. Well over 1000 pages of materials: a great wealth of reading.

Favorite Easter Book!

This is my two-year-old's favorite Easter book. He enjoys the rhymes and pictures. I like it because our family celebrates all the Easter traditions (egg hunts, the Easter bunny, etc), but I want my children to know that the true meaning of Easter is our Lord's resurrection!

Great balance of secular and religious

This book acknowledges and does not condemn the fun involved in the secular celebrations of Easter, including the Easter Bunny, but also smoothly points out that they are not the most important part. Succintly states the religious significance of the holiday. Would be nice to have a little more detail on that, but it summarizes neatly. Illustrations are pleasing. Some of the wording seems to tend the text more to a girl than a boy (ie. wearing a new Easter "dress"), but the pictures show both boys and girls (and changing those particular few words during read-aloud will not interfere with the rhyming). Also mentions an Easter parade and choir, which may not be common to all celebrations. On the whole, quite happy to have found this book. Will be giving to my one-year-old son for Easter, but expect my five-year-old daughter to have some interest as well.

Excelent explanation of traditions and truth

This is a cute book that explains in a kid friendly way that it's okay to believe in the Easter bunny and to like other things about Easter, but that the real reason for Easter is "all about God's Son".

An absolute "must" for every bird lover!

This book is essential for anyone planning to visit this beautiful island, and if you have no plans to go there... look through this wonderful guide, and you may change your mind! The glossy pages are filled with photos of the most illusive and rare birds of Kaua'I. These colorful creatures are found nowhere else on earth. They are photographed in their native surroundings, which are as unique and bold as the birds themselves. Jim Denny did a wonderful job describing each species in detail. Wonderful photos, great reading! I highly recommend this book for lovers of birds, and lovers of beauty. Thumbs up!

Interesting text, excellent photographs

Jim Denny's excellent photographs complement his excellent text. The book is neither a field guide (for that, use Douglas Pratt's Field Guide to the Birds of Hawai'i and the Tropical Pacific) nor is it a site guide (use Pratt or Sohren for that), but something else: an accurate and fascinating review of the birds of the island and how they fit into the marvelous land. Bits of interesting history are interwoven with the descriptions, and Denny's relation of the tragedy of the lost birds of Kaua'i can make you weep. I highly recommend this book to anyone who has or will look for birds on this remarkable island. My one complaint is that the paintings Denny chose to illustrate those birds he could not photograph are not the most accurate depictions available, though they are of historical interest.

The mutiny on the Bounty was one of the most controversial events of eighteenth-century maritime history. This book publishes a full and absorbing narrative of the events by one of the participants, the boatswain's mate James Morrison, who tells the story of the mounting tensions over the course of the voyage out to Tahiti, the fascinating encounter with Polynesian culture there, and the shocking drama of the event itself.

In the aftermath, Morrison was among those who tried to make a new life on Tahiti. In doing so, he gained a deeper understanding of Polynesian culture than any European who went on to write about the people of the island and their way of life before it was changed forever by Christianity and colonial contact. Morrison was not a professional scientist but a keen observer with a lively sympathy for Islanders. This is the most insightful and wide-ranging of early European accounts of Tahitian life.

Mutiny and Aftermath is the first scholarly edition of this classic of Pacific history and anthropology. It is based directly on a close study of Morrison’s original manuscript, one of the treasures of the Mitchell Library in Sydney, Australia. The editors assess and explain Morrison’s observations of Islander culture and social relations, both on Tubuai in the Austral Islands and on Tahiti itself. The book fully identifies the Tahitian people and places that Morrison refers to and makes this remarkable text accessible for the first time to all those interested in an extraordinary chapter of early Pacific history.

About the Author
Nicholas Thomas is director of the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge. He first visited the Pacific in 1984 to research his PhD thesis on the Marquesas Islands. He has since written extensively on art, empire, and related themes, and curated exhibitions in Australia, New Zealand, and the UK, many in collaboration with contemporary artists. His early book, Entangled Objects, influentially contributed to a revival of material culture studies. He went on to publish, among other works, Oceanic Art in the Thames and Hudson World of Art series and Islanders: The Pacific in the Age of Empire, which was awarded the Wolfson History Prize.

One of the main problems faced by teachers and students who have a scholarly interest in Southeast Asia is the lack of general, user-friendly texts in the social sciences. The absence of an introduction to the sociology of Southeast Asia is especially unfortunate. This volume attempts to meet these needs. This is, then, the first sole-authored introductory sociology text on Southeast Asia that focuses on change and development in the region, provides an overview of the important sociological and political economy writings, and considers the key concepts and themes in the field since 1945. Some multiauthored works do exist but these either are outdated or focus on specialized topics. Aimed primarily at undergraduates up to the final year, it will also be a useful reference work for postgraduates and researchers who lack such a general work.

About the Author
Victor T. King (University of Leeds) has published widely on processes of social change and development in Southeast Asia, not least on cultural and ethnic tourism.
