Making an Adventure

I think most of us deserately need an adventure, a trip that both allows us to both escape and recliam our lives at the same time. Thus the market for all sorts of adventure books; from Clive Cussler's novels to non-fiction works about Scott's expedition to Antartica. Sutherland's story simply and wonderfully captures the daring and curiosity that makes these trips possible. As she points out there is a childlike quality to this sort of thing that we probably all share. The desire to see what's on the next block, over the next hill, down that big river. In her case while flying she sees a beautiful place that is very difficult to get to. All visitors arriving on Oahu, seated on the left hand aisle of the plane see this same sight; the North Shore of Molokai. A wilderness with sea cliffs thousands of feet high, turquoise and cobalt blue water, fringed with verdant jungle. It also has waves that break on those cliffs that are fifty feet high, a windward shore mariners do well to stay away from, and no easy way to walk in. Her attraction basically overcomes her fear and she prepares her own expidition, alone. She sets out to swim from the closest available site she can get to, towing a pack, and come out at an old leper's colony that has a trail that evenutally leads back to civilization. The route is eighteen miles long, and is filled with the sort of edenic paradise Hawaii once was. This is the stuff that all great adventures are made of; Scott, Amudson, Cook. The difference is that it is on a small scale and available to us all. This book takes us through that first impulse, to planning the trip(s), to what happened. Its both a wonderful read and an adventurer's how to book. While she tell's very little about herself and her inner life, her actions reveal a great deal about her, and anyone who kind of chases a dream.

Audrey did well to limit the scope of this book. It takes some imagination to appreciate it. When she surfs into that cove to camp, it's not a soft, sandy beach that awaits her. It's in over and onto the wave-battered rocks, and if she gets hurt, there's no one to help. Having seen it from the air, flying by at low altitude a number of times along those seacliffs, I can testify that it is one extremely wild place! I've always delighted in the metaphorical title, for paddle her own canoe through life she has! Yet, it would have been wonderful if she'd written another book since the others about all of her more interesting Hawaii meanderings, such as the SCUBA diving, creeping along very scary heights in those jagged Oahu mountaintops, shrugging off being bitten to the bone by an eel while reaching for a lobster 60 feet down, and on and on. I hope she does write a book of Hawaii memories. Few people have lived such a life of continual adventure, including all the wild weekend jaunts.

Transnational cinemas are eclipsing national cinemas in the contemporary world, and Sino-French films exemplify this phenomenon through the cinematic coupling of the Sinophone and the Francophone, linking France not just with the Chinese mainland but also with the rest of the Chinese-speaking world. Sinophone directors most often reach out to French cinema by referencing and adapting it. They set their films in Paris and metropolitan France, cast French actors, and sometimes use French dialogue, even when the directors themselves don't understand it. They tend to view France as mysterious, sexy, and sophisticated, just as the French see China and Taiwan as exotic.

As Michelle E. Bloom makes clear, many films move past a simplistic opposition between East and West and beyond Orientalist and Occidentalist cross-cultural interplay. Bloom focuses on films that have appeared since 2000 such as Tsai Ming-liang's What Time Is It There? , Hou Hsiao-hsien's Flight of the Red Balloon, and Dai Sijie's Balzac and the Little Chinese Seamstress. She views the work of these well-known directors through a Sino-French optic, applying the tropes of métissage (or biraciality), intertextuality, adaptation and remake, translation, and imitation to shed new light on their work. She also calls attention to important, lesser studied films: Taiwanese director Cheng Yu-chieh's Yang Yang, which depicts the up-and-coming Taiwanese star Sandrine Pinna as a mixed race beauty; and Emily Tang Xiaobai's debut film Conjugation, which contrasts Paris and post-Tiananmen Square Beijing, the one an incarnation of liberty, the other a place of entrapment. Bloom's insightful analysis also probes what such films reveal about their Taiwanese and Chinese creators.

Scholars have long studied Sino-French literature, but this inaugural full-length work on Sino-French cinema maps uncharted territory, offering a paradigm for understanding other cross-cultural interminglings and tools to study transnational cinema and world cinema. The Sino-French, rich and multifaceted, linguistically, culturally, and ethnically, constitutes an important part of film studies, Francophone studies, Sinophone studies and myriad other fields. The International Minimum tells the history of internationalism in Japan from the 1930s to 1960s, shedding light on the deep connections between modes of diplomacy during times of aggressive imperial expansion and of peaceful cooperation. For most of the twentieth century, a rhetoric of international cooperation for peace and stability persisted as the lingua franca of foreign relations in Japan and around the world, even during the years of rampant nationalisms and global war. The advocacy and practice of multilateral cooperation, though attenuated and often distorted and abused, did not disappear during the years of aggression and war, but instead were channeled into new and unexpected directions. With a broad view of international relations that takes into account but also looks beyond the official sites of multilateral cooperation, this book uncovers a continuous evolution of internationalist thought and activity in Japan that extends across the dark valley of war and the historiographical schism of defeat. Acknowledging this continuity does not mitigate the violence and atrocities of the wartime regime. But recognizing that institutions, activities, and rhetoric that were derived from the Wilsonian internationalism of the 1920s contributed to imperialism and war, as well as to the postwar construction of a peaceful and democratic "new Japan," does help us understand the enthusiastic participation in war and empire in the years before 1945 by many of the same people in all sectors of Japanese society who eagerly embraced postwar structures of cooperation for peace and shared prosperity.

This study rethinks the standard narrative of Japan's international cooperation in three ways: by taking seriously those international activities conducted outside of formal state-level relations, by examining cultural forms of international engagement, and by asserting the importance of rhetoric in cultivating what was then referred to as an "international mind." Rather than signaling the demise of multilateral participation, Japan's infamous withdrawal from the League of Nations became, in fact, the occasion for the diversification of internationalist activities. For instance, proponents of a "people's diplomacy" campaigned to bring the 1940 Olympic Games to Tokyo and established the Society for International Cultural Relations, a national organization for international cultural exchange. But as Japanese society was increasingly mobilized for war, even such popular and cultural efforts at international cooperation were made to contribute to the imperialist project. In the decade after the war ended, familiar internationalist rhetoric became a keystone in the construction of a so-called new Japan.

This book traces the evolution of the internationalist worldview in Japan by examining both official policy and general discourse surrounding epochal moments such as Japan's withdrawal from the League and admission into the United Nations, the failed and successful attempts to host a Tokyo Olympiad, and wartime and postwar regional conferences in Tokyo and Bandung, Indonesia. Bringing these varied elements together produces a synthetic history of internationalism, imperialism, and the performance of diplomacy in the twentieth century, when new global norms required a minimum level of international engagement. This story is told through the materials of both high diplomacy and mass culture. Unpublished documents in government and private archives reveal one layer of the formation of Japanese internationalism. The public discourse found in popular journals, books, newspapers, advertisements, poems, and songs articulates what would become the common-sense views of international relations that helped delineate the realm of the possible in imperial and postwar Japanese foreign policy.

I am impressed.

Before you purchase a copy just remember this is a dictionary for CANTONESE slang. Cantonese being one of the many Chinese dialogues, obviously not every Chinese speaks Cantonese.

So having said that, I must inform everyone that Cantonese has the most vivid descriptions and usages of slang of the entire Chinese language (yet, being the least awful sounding). How do I know, because I was born in that wonderful city of Hong Kong! It's my native tongue, so trust me, we know how to slang in style~~ However, not all Cantonese slangs are entirely cruses nor are they offensive, you can use many of them safely in any environment. And this book presents the best of them in their original forms, including the usage of each slang and how to apply it within your speech. I am amazed by how accurate the dictionary truly is. The definations are all better than I thought they would be (as well as its entertaining value)! So if you are ever tired from repeating the same old phrases over and over again, then try adding a few Cantonese slangs into your speech to spice things up a little bit.

Long overdue, but worth it.

When you see that an ex-CID officer wrote the intro and gave his nod of approval, you know you're in for a slang dictionary like few others--and this even includes such longtime favorites as Constantine's "Japanese Street Slang". Drawing from various diverse sources ranging from linguistic research papers to pornographic magazines, the authors have their bases covered. Even if you don't know Cantonese you'll find it's a very fun read what with such innocent sounding expressions as "ice fire" making you shake your head in disbelief when you read the definition. Students of Cantonese will like this one a lot: it has both the Yale transliteration (which it's indexed by) and Chinese characters so you'll be able to lend it to your Chinese friends too so they can learn how to express themselves more colorfully in English. Highly recommended.

Buy the 2003 complete version

In my opinion, buying the older version or a pocket version of this dictionary is not worthwhile. One of the main reasons to buy this dictionary is its completeness - anything you hear in Chinese is almost surely in this dictionary. However, the older version (which I have at home - got it maybe 10 years ago?) is pretty useless, I thought - very much more limited in scope - and I imagine the pocket versions wouldn't be of much use either, though I haven't looked at one.

Big marketing mistake giving all these dictionaries the same name. Bummer.

ALL medical professionals need to read this book before coming here

Welcome to the Islands

When I moved to Hawaii seven years ago, I attended an orientation for new faculty at the University where they said "you either love teaching here or you hate it." In that cohort of faculty was a blond-haired blue-eyed woman with a German accent hired to teach in one of the science departments. I did not see her again until running into her on campus seven months later when she told me she was leaving "the students here are rude and disrespectful and I have not had a successful experience. Every day is a struggle to get their attention." I thought back to that orientation session... in the intervening time I was having a terrific cross-cultural experience learning about Asian cultures and what exactly it was that makes a classroom at the University so different that one on the mainland. Clearly, here was a person who was not able to grasp the interpersonal insights and skills we'd spent time talking about that day, and which were a continual thread to the discussions of how to help students in my department. I guess that helping her address these issues was less important among faculty in her department.

Reach out to Multiculturalism

She was not alone, and in the intervening years there are many other examples of people who either "get it" and enjoy this special place, or who just can't quite fit in, and don't have the tools to figure out how to cope. This extends beyond faculty at the University into every sphere of work. Of course, in some areas you can structure your work day and your life in such a way that you never come in contact with anybody who is not a "haole" - if that is the case, you are missing out on the richness and cultural heritage here. If you can learn and grow, Hawaii is a wonderful place to enjoy world cultures and the unique local culture. I truly believe Hawaii is a model for the rest of the USA in terms of how to realize that we all are persons and we all deserve respect on our merits, not just on a stereotype.

UH has an office named The Center for Teaching Excellence which helps faculty to make the adjustment to teaching in the islands. In a parallel way, I expect the UH Medical School (known locally as JABSOM) to continue their rich tradition of multicultural sensitivity and inclusion. The first edition of this book was a solid effort in this regard, published in 1980. I'd written a review of that one a couple of years ago, since I felt that it was better at addressing Hawaii-specific issues than the usual textbook resources on cross-cultural nursing. This second edition came out in 2011 and is due to be a beacon of hope to all medical sailors seeking harbor on our shores. Aloha!

Take a Peek

A nice feature of Amazon nowadays is to see the Table of Contents and peek inside the book; for that reason I will not repeat here what you can read in the author's own words. The book seems to be about twenty percent longer, and chapters have been added on some of the more recently prominent immigrant groups from Asian countries that had barely been on the radar in 1980 (Cambodians and Koreans, for example). A wider variety of contributing authors are included, and often the writer is from the group they are describing. There is a glossary of terms from the anthropology literature in the back, seemingly designed to give medical practitioners a more solid footing to describe the friction points in acculturation, etc.

For these reasons, I think this book should be handed to every MD, RN, RPT, or medical professional of any type who comes to the Islands, along with their Hawaii license.

Suggestions

Now, all of this is not to say that the book is still perfect. From the nurse's point of view, I wish that some of the chapters had been written or reviewed by nurses; I think the perspectives of medicine and nursing are different, and that some very practical tips on how to interact with patients and families would have improved this. For nursing, one of the main resources on cross-cultural interaction is Lipson & Dibble (from UCSF) and they too categorize each cultural group by country-of-origin; The nursing schools here tend to use that one as required reference books for student work that includes obeisance to the cultural origin of the patient at hand... with a little different focus this book would have had every right to supplant these others as the index text for this subject area. Next, one of the friction points in general communication between persons from the mainland and persons from an Asian culture is body language - such things as how long to wait for an answer when you ask a question, how far apart to stand, eye contact, etc - these things are very specific and though they often sometimes vary from one Asian culture to another, they constitute an area to work on. For that reason, I think a "how to" on this subject would add.

"Local"

The book makes an excellent effort to look forward - where do all the cultures go from here? But did not really look at the underclass and the "locals" as if they were a distinct subgroup - which they are. The youth of today are not major consumers of health care in the way that the elderly population would be, and youth culture evolves at the speed of light - but I would have loved to read the authors' assessment of this. Of course, this is a moving target, and today's "Jawaiian" craze could be obsolete long before the 3rd edition rolls out. I wish there was a website specific to this book where the authors could archive some of the updated web resources on subjects such as pidgin.

In summary, your preparation for Hawaii should consist of more than just the Lonely Planet Guide. Get this one!

I lived in Hawaii for many years; raised there children there; taught at the U of Hawaii/Manoa in a demanding program which drew from the top 1% of students at the University -- and they are very very good students indeed, from diverse backgrounds. This book is a standard, incorporated in many programs. Highly recommended.

Excellent Cross Cultural Reference

New edition of an old favorite. For mental health professionals working in Hawaii, it is a must. For all others, this is a great read and very informative of the populations and their mental health needs in Hawaii.
