Figures of Southeast Asian Modernity brings together the fieldwork of over eighty scholars and covers the nine major countries of the region: Burma (Myanmar), Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. An introduction outlines important social transformations in Southeast Asia and key theoretical and methodological innovations that result from ethnographic attention to the study of key figures. Each section begins with an introduction by a country editor followed by short essays offering vivid and intimate portraits set against the background of contemporary Southeast Asia. Their inquiries then extend to narrative feature, activist video, animation, and other digital hybrids. At every turn, the book confronts digital ironies: On the one hand, its portability facilitates forms of radically private film production and audience habits of small-screen consumption. Yet it also simultaneously links up makers and consumers, curators and censors allowing for speedier circulation, more discussion, and quicker formations of public political and aesthetic discourses.

DV-Made China introduces new frameworks in a Chinese setting that range from aesthetics to ethical activism, from digital shooting and editing techniques to the politics of film circulation in festivals and online. Politics, the authors urge, travels along paths of aesthetic excitement, and aesthetic choices, conversely, always bear ethical consequences. The films, their makers, their audiences and their distributional pathways all harbor implications for social change that are closely intertwined with the fate of media culture in the new century of a world that both contains and is influenced by China.

A wonderful book to give at Easter!

I gave the "Here Comes Peter Cottontail" to my young grandson, 13 months. His mother says he absolutely loves it. It introduced him to Peter Cottontail and that well known favorite song we heard as we grew up watching Easter animated stories on TV and VCR! It's a excellent purchase if you want your young child to be introduced to Peter Cottontail!

Complete and accurate

This excellent board book is a simple, historical account of Passover as found in the book of Exodus. It's wordy enough to be enjoyed by older children. The colorful pictures still capture the attention of younger children. Candy Cane Press has a whole series of board books covering all sorts of holidays, and I've liked every one of them. The perspective is religious, but not preachy. I appreciate the simplified but accurate stories

Not for little children

The fact that this is a board book -- typical of baby books-- may inspire purchase of this book for very small children. Also it is advertised as a child's first introduction to the story of Exodus. However, as a parent, I wouldn't recommend reading this book to small children (under age 5 for example).

This book focuses too heavily on the plagues-- with somewhat disturbing illustrations.

Perhaps the book is good for older children in depicting the suffering of the Hebrew people as well as the Egyptians who also suffered for the Pharoah's obstinance.

A good book, in my view, is one that provides new information about a worthy theme. A fine book is one that provides a new perspective from which to understand a significant body of information. A superb book is one that provides both new information about a worthy theme and a new, thought-provoking perspective from which to understand a significant body of information. This is a superb book. Mark Mullins, professor of sociology of religion and Christian studies at Meiji Gakuin University in Tokyo, has devoted years of research to pursuing an answer to the question of "what happens to a world religion when it is transplanted from one culture to another." More specifically, he focuses on "made in Japan" forms of Protestant Christianity-not its mainline forms but its indigenous movements. "My primary concern," he says, "has been to understand what Japanese Christians have done with Christianity, independent of the authority and control of the mission churches." ... Andha Yug is illustrated with paintings from a rare, single manuscript of the Razmnama (Book of War), dated to 1598–1599. Created during the reign (1556–1605) of the great Mughal emperor Akbar, the Razmnama is written in Persian, yet it is a translation of the Mahabharata, one of the great Indian epics of Hinduism. An essay by Yael Rice reveals the Indian, Persian, and European elements within the translations, as well as the diverse cultural character of the Mughal court of Akbar.

Ma‘i Lepera attempts to recover Hawaiian voices at a significant moment in Hawai‘i’s history. Over a span of thirty-four years more than five thousand people were sent to a leprosy settlement on the remote peninsula in north Moloka‘i traditionally known as Makanalua. Their story has seldom been told despite the hundreds of letters they wrote to families, friends, and the Board of Health, as well as to Hawaiian-language newspapers, detailing their concerns at the settlement as they struggled to retain their humanity in the face of ma‘i lepera. Many remained politically active and, at times, defiant, resisting authority and challenging policies. As much as they suffered, the Kānaka Maoli of Makanalua established new bonds and cared for one another in ways that have been largely overlooked in popular histories describing leprosy in Hawai‘i.

Although Ma‘i Lepera is primarily a social history of disease and medicine, it offers compelling evidence of how leprosy and its treatment altered Hawaiian perceptions and identities. It changed how Kānaka Maoli viewed themselves: By the end of the nineteenth century, the “diseased” had become a cultural “other” to the healthy Hawaiian. Moreover, it reinforced colonial ideology and furthered the use of both biomedical practices and disease as tools of colonization.

Ma‘i Lepera will be of significant interest to students and scholars of Hawai‘i and medical history and historical and medical anthropology. Remembering the Patients - A Lost Perspective now Regained

As descendents of patients who were exiled to Kalaupapa, we are always on the look out for information that helps us understand what our grandmother, grandfather, and their siblings went through. So much of what's written about Kalaupapa focuses on Father Damien and Mother Marianne, and while their sacrifice must be recognized and their efforts to help ease the suffering of the patients appreciated, it is important not to forget the patients. Our grandparents were taken from their families and thrown into isolation for life, never to return to their loved ones, to eventually die of leprosy before a cure was discovered. They married, loved, and bore children, babies who were taken away at birth and raised as orphans.

Records of what life was like for these patients is almost nonexistent. Photos of the era are particularly poignant - the nuns, priests, and doctors are named, but almost none of the patients are ever identified. Kerri Inglis has done a much needed service to us all: she has helped us all understand what life was like for the patients, particularly our fellow Native Hawaiians. This indigenous perspective is lacking from most research on Kalaupapa.

Our family is grateful that Dr. Inglis has helped to shine a light in the darkness. Her research is flawless, her writing easy to understand despite the facts and details. If you're looking for both scholarship and poignancy about the story of Kalaupapa, then this is the book for you. We can't wait for her next volume which will cover the early 20th century, when our kupuna were there. Mahalo a nui ia 'oe e Dr. Inglis!

This account was a dry medical account with little in the way of of interesting personal stories, The contributions of Father Damien and the Sisters of Saint Francis were barely mentioned. It reads more like a textbook.

Dear Readers:

Thank you for coming along on the journey of Josephine Cain. She and I both appreciate your interest.

Even though I hail from Nebraska, I knew very little about the Transcontinental Railroad when I started--and only half of it when I finished. There's so much to learn and too little time and too many pages to get it all read and included in the book. And I only covered part of the Union Pacific's story heading west from Omaha, Nebraska. There's a whole other set of circumstances and stories that belong to the Central Pacific heading east from Sacramento, California.

I tried to include as many facts as possible, but alas, there were many, many facts I had to leave out (or else you'd be reading a book of 1,000 pages or more!) Plus, in order to have a proper romance I had to condense time. The actual time span for the building of the railroad from Omaha was June 1865 to May 1869. Rails were being laid in California as early as December 1863. Fremont and North Platte, Nebraska, were the towns the Union Pacific wintered in the first and second winters, Cheyenne was the spot where they hunkered down during the third winter, and they stayed at Evanston, Wyoming (on the Utah border), during the fourth winter. Laying 1,086 miles of track took nearly four years. Or should I say, only four years considering the hardships and challenges the crews encountered along the way.
How many men worked on the railroad? It's hard to say, as men came and went. But it is known that Chinese immigrants were the prominent work force on the Central Pacific line heading east, while the major ethnic group working for the Union Pacific were Irish (like Hudson). Add men of every background, character, and ethnicity, and tens of thousands of men worked on the project. Many died along the way.

As for what came next? The following is paraphrased from a PBS timeline of the project: By 1880, the Pacific railroad carried $50 million worth of freight annually. It served as an artery for 200 million acres of settlement between the Mississippi and the Pacific. The Plains Indians were scattered to reservations, and a little over 1,000 buffalo remained of the millions that once populated the grasslands. A trip between San Francisco and New York, which once might have occupied six grueling months, only took a few days.

Progress always comes at a high price. That price is what continues to capture my interest in all things historical. Those who came before us left everything they knew to take a chance on the unknown. Would I be so brave? I'm not sure.

If you'd like to do further research, there are many good resources. Here are a few: AMC has a very interesting, frank miniseries called Hell on Wheels that details the life in the transient towns that followed the railroad. Season Three started last August (2013). Eugene Arundel Miller has three books that detail the construction in Nebraska, Wyoming, and Utah, which include hints for you to personally visit the sites along the railroad's path. Empire Express by David Haward Bain has a very detailed account of all sides, and The Journal of Sean Sullivan by William Durbin is a fictional diary of one young worker. All the books provide many photographs and illustrations to help bring the history alive.

She is a fan of anything antique--humans included.

An enjoyable read

I did enjoy this book but to be honest it left a little to be desired. I can't go into to too much detail without spoiling things but one of the big problems I had was the fact that the hero and the heroine really didn't spend much time at all with each other until the second half. Though to be fair at that time they both were in relationships with other people but I still wanted a little more.
I really enjoyed the historical aspect of the laying of the railroad and also the look into what it must have been like for those who were in the theater when Lincoln was assassinated. Both were things that I hadn't given much thought to so it was cool to learn about them.
Both Hudson and Josephine were great characters though Josephine was a little spoiled and selfish at the beginning. Thankfully though it wasn't to an annoying extent and not enough to make you not like her.
All in all it was a good book that made for a great one time read.

Not my favorite...

I've read a couple of Nancy's books, and some have taken more effort to 'get into' than others. I felt that way with Josephine's story.

The words just didn't grab and hold my attention. It was easy to set the book down, and I wasn't anxiously awaiting a moment where I could pick up the story again.

Josephine herself was a bit hard for me to like. She's a bit spoiled, rash, and bull-headed, and though she grows and changes as the story progresses, I had a hard time connecting with her through most of the book.

I enjoyed learning about the progress of the railway after the Civil War, but overall, The Journey of Josephine Cain wasn't a 'keeper' book for me.

Bring history to life

I don't recall reading one of Nancy Moser's book previously, but The Journey of Josephine Cain was a fine story to introduce me to her writing. She has taken a little know piece of American history and woven a tale that is interesting and entertaining. Characters:

Josephine Cain, daughter of a Union General
General Cain impeccable leader of Union forces during the Civil War and now leader of the railroad's task to lay track across America.
Lewis - Suitor of Josephine - His character comes across as flawed early in the story, but unbeknownst to Josephine.
Hudson - Union soldier under General Cain and now trusted worker under General Cain in the railroad's push to lay track
Mrs. Cain - bitter, grieving mother of Josephine who can not reconcile her grief and live a normal life.

The story begins just at the end of the Civil War when Josephine is attending a theater production in Ford Theater. She sits in a box and has a clear view of President Lincoln and his party. She also witnesses first hand the assignation of Lincoln.

The story moves on and being a real "daddy's girl," Josephine wants to leave her home in D.C. and go west where she can be near her father - really so she can escape the restrictions and confines of her mother's grief. So she journeys with Lewis west to find her father. Once she arrives she meets Hudson who is the epitome of a strong gentleman, gracious in his actions, and respected by his leaders and the men with whom he works.

Historically, the book brings to light the still raw relationship between white men adventuring westward and the native Indians. But it also shows how they are trying to get along. The story also brings to light the fact that America is a melting pot when it refers to the men working the rail line - Irish, Italian, Chinese, black, white, Southern, Northern. How they survived the Civil War and how they must now try to pull the country together and their own personal lives as well.

I found the story interesting and a nice read. The plot was somewhat predictable and I wondered why the villain was so slow to be recognized. "The Journey" was not just a westward trek for Josephine, it was a journey of discovery as to just who she is and what her place in life is to be. It is in discovering that she can achieve and she can make wise choices.

Where is the CD?????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The workbook is meant to be compatible with a cd. The first exercise you are supposed to listen to is a conversation about everyday expressions and circle the expression you hear. Problem is... there is no cd to listen to the conversations!!!!!!! The textbook is well written but not including the cd is really stupid. Why not include the cd or make one available?? Extremely dissapointed with the workbook.

more than enough..

very useful if combine usage with the textbook.. alot of practices in terms of grammer, writing, reading and listening (files can be found online, troublesome though but it's better than nothing)..

BUT.. the workbook doesnt come with answers.. you have to check it aganist your textbook... which can be kind of troublesome...

This series of textbooks/workbooks are more inclined for classroom teaching.. nevertheless it's more than enough for DIY learning as well....
